MEDITECH’s Mobile Blood Bank improves speed and safety of donation drives in Botswana

MEDITECH South Africa is improving safety and efficiency for Botswana’s blood donor drives by implementing a mobile laptop solution for blood bank.

This offline technology helps support blood collection services across the region, where network connectivity is often scarce, and eliminates time spent processing unusable donated units based on ineligible donor status. It also enhances patient safety by preventing unusable blood from being entered into the LIVE system.

MEDITECH’s Blood Bank solution has been in use across Botswana’s National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) since 2015, at two regional centres situated in Gaborone and Francistown. The Gaborone centre went LIVE with its mobile solution this past March, at the student wellness clinic of the University of Botswana.

Gaborone’s system contains the complete database of all registered blood donors in Botswana, which enables the NBTS mobile team to recall any registered donor at any mobile clinic, as well as access all donor demographics, number of donations, status, markers and comments. The donor comments section also contains details on any status changes, so the NBTS mobile team members can conduct counselling on site if needed.

The Francistown centre is expected to go LIVE with the Mobile Laptop Solution in July, with all of the same functionality and benefits.
