Paper to be presented about requirement of PoPI Act and GDPR

A member of the Information Regulator will be presenting a paper to help shed light on the requirement of Protection of Personal Information Act 2013 (PoPI) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Sizwe Snail ka Mtuze will help business owners understand how European law will affect South African companies and it will also enable them assess their current state against the GDPR.

Xperien is hosting an event in conjunction with Blancco Technology Group, a global leader in data erasure and diagnostics, to help companies understand the impact of GDPR on South African business and how it aligns with the PoPI Act.

Blancco focuses on aspects of data compliance and cybersecurity that companies of all sizes need to take into consideration.

Xperien’s Bridgette Vermaak says the European Union’s (EU) GDPR law is one of the most wide-ranging and comprehensive pieces of legislation regarding sensitive consumer data ever enacted.

“And it’s about to go into effect,” said Vermaak.

“When that happens, on May 25, it will change the way consumer data is protected, not just in Europe, but worldwide.”

The event will highlight the challenges associated with IT Asset Disposal (ITAD) and provide solutions designed to enable organisations to become compliant. It will also showcase cost effective solutions to combat the challenges associated with data loss.

PoPI Act expert Dr Peter Tobin will be discussing the effect of GDPR on South African businesses. He specialises in compliance, data privacy and IT governance and is a highly recognised speaker and who is professionally certified in Project Manager (PMP), IT Professional (PMIITPSA) and IT Governance (CGEIT).

Over the past 20 years, Dr Tobin has offered a range of services based on world-class methods, tools, frameworks and standards to assist individuals, teams and organisations to improve their performance in a number of selected focus areas.

The event will be held at 11am on June 15 at SLOW in the City (opposite the Sandton Gautrain Station), Rivonia Road, Johannesburg.
