Andela officials discuss building capacities of software developers

Amr Talaat, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, has received a delegation from Andela — a specialised company in building the capabilities of software developers in the African continent.

The delegation was headed by Andela Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Christina Sass and was attended Maha Rashad, the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), and Sabrina Roshan, Andela-Director of Expansion Strategy.

During the meeting, Talaat welcomed the executive steps taken by the company towards setting up a headquarters in Egypt in cooperation with ITIDA to prepare Egyptian calibers in the field of software and IT services, thus providing job opportunities for them at various international companies.

He highlighted Egypt’s interest in supporting African youth to enable them to enter national and international markets and polishing their skills in the ICT field, which President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi highlighted during Africa 2018 Forum, hosted in Sharm El-Sheikh. He also added that efforts must be made to bridge the gap between the promising developers in Africa, labour markets’ needs and the international companies’ growing demand for talents.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the efforts and initiatives of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and its affiliates in building capacities of young people and polishing their skills. These initiatives entail the presidential initiative which aims to train more than 10,000 Egyptian and African young people on the development of digital applications and games and establish about 100 African start-ups. The meeting also discussed cooperation prospects to help a number of beneficiaries and trainees benefit from this initiative in cooperation with various African countries. This is in addition to discussing the possibility of establishing a regional training institute for the company in the City of Knowledge in the New Administrative Capital to serve the African continent’s young people and enhance and build their capabilities in the field of software development.

Andela is one of the companies specialised in the field of qualifying and nurturing talents in the continent of Africa in the field of software to meet the global technology companies’ need of human resources qualified at the highest level, in different countries of the world. Andela was established in 2014 and has many branches and offices in a number of African cities such as Nairobi, Lagos, Kampala and Kigali, plus other offices in New York, San Francisco and Texas.
