GE will help PGE Giek thermal power plant meet EU air quality standard

GE Power and PGE Mining and Conventional Energy, a company from the PGE Group, have concluded an agreement to develop a complete flue gas desulphurisation system in the PGE Power Plant Complex in Bydgoszcz. With GE’s patented NID™ mid-range technology, the Bydgoszcz unit will meet tightened EU emission standards, which will come into effect in 2021.

An investment worth 44m zł will be implemented in the EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) form, which will cover the design, procurement, delivery and construction of a complete flue gas desulphurisation system for turnkey boilers. The built-in flue gas desulphurisation system is based on GE’s patented semi-dry flue gas desulphurisation (NID) technology, which is one of the most advanced solutions currently available on the market, providing high efficiency in both flue gas and dust reduction. In Poland, GE has successfully implemented similar installations in power plants in Janików, Bydgoszcz, Poznań, Lodz and Dąbrowa Górnicza (in progress).

We are proud to have selected GE technology that will enable PGE CHP to comply with the latest, more stringent EU regulations on air pollution,” says Sławomir Żygowski, Sales Director for Poland and the Baltic States, GE Steam Power Systems. A local, professional and experienced team for decades dealing with maintenance and repairs of the installation. We are now beginning to integrate our AQCS technology with the capabilities of digital solutions.

The construction of the flue gas desulphurisation system will ensure that the unit in Bydgoszcz is permanently reduced to below 130mg/m3 and dust – below 10mg/m3 in purified flue gases. As a result, the CHP will comply with the emission standards contained in the IED (Industrial Emissions Directive) as in the BAT Conclusions, which impose requirements for using the best available environmental techniques.

As agreed in the contract the modernisation works are to be completed and the installation put into operation in December 2018. This investment also fits into the strategy of sustainable and environmentally friendly development of the PGE Capital Group.

“We have a strict environmental policy that will be implemented consistently in the future. We are aware of our impact on the environment and therefore we focus on reducing environmental impacts, among others, by adjusting production assets to the new energy market model”- says Sławomir Zawada, President of PGE Mining and Conventional Energy.

The new installation will not only meet the increasingly stringent requirements for SO2 emissions, but will also enable full utilisation of the power of the two boilers, which will ensure the security of heat supply to the inhabitants of Bydgoszcz.

“We are proud to partner with PGE Giek, our partner in the development of the Polish energy sector, on this important investment. GE Power is fully committed to providing our customers with energy-efficient, reliable, clean, sustainable and environmentally responsible technologies,” adds Beata Stelmach, GE’s President for Poland and the Baltic States.
