Vila Nova De Famalicao becomes Smart City in partnership with NOS

NOS and Vila Nova de Famalicão town council have established a cooperative partnership with the goal of putting the council on the Smart Cities map, boosting environmental and energy sustainability, as well as innovation in the urban infrastructure, services and resources of the local authority.

The contract was signed by Manuel Ramalho Eanes, Board Director of NOS, and Paulo Cunha, President of Vila Nova de Famalicão Municipal Council, and sets out a commitment to share information and knowledge, as well to implement joint initiatives to expedite the application of technological solutions in urban intelligence in order to optimise the quality of life of people who live or work in the town.

In accordance with the partnership, NOS will supply the Vila Nova de Famalicão town council with a global and integrated solution based on an Urban Intelligence System that takes the form of a command and control centre, 100% equipped by the operator to install and activate an open source platform for integrated urban management and linked to the NOS data centre.

As a first step, the service to be implemented will see an Incident Management solution being provided, which, integrated into a Centralized Management Platform, will enable council services to have detailed knowledge of all locations and the specific nature of incidents reported by councils and their employees in real time, which will allow a rapid response to and resolution of problems. The solution will not only mean that human and physical resources can be rationalised, but will also maximise the operational efficiency of municipal services.

The cooperation between the operator and the council will enable technological innovation in municipal services to be leveraged, in particular in such areas as mobility, collaboration, energy efficiency and processes, making the town more efficient, more responsive to its citizens and their needs, while at the same time making a contribution towards a consolidated local development project.

Manuel Ramalho Eanes, Board Director of NOS, said: “The path towards modernising services by optimising the use of technology, made possible through urban intelligence collaborative platforms, is today an essential one. With projects that have already been implemented successfully in the Oeiras and Lagoa town councils and now with this new partnership with the Vila Nova de Famalicão town council, we intend to continue on our mission of expanding the network of smart towns and cities across the whole country, combining the strength and convergence of our solutions with the ambition of city and town councils to speed up interactions with their citizens, improving their services and the sustainability of their resources.”

The President of the Vila Nova de Famalicão Town Council, Paulo Cunha, commented: “Everything we can do to improve management efficiency to enable us to intervene faster and more efficiently in the public area is a top priority for us, while the use of new technologies can provide huge leverage for the improvement of our services and of the responses that we give to citizens.”
