Zain Iraq partners with Ericsson to upgrade its network in Karbala and Najaf

Zain Iraq, part of the Zain Group, a leading mobile telecom network provider in MENA, has announced an agreement with Ericsson, a global leader in ICT services and solutions, to develop and modernise its network in Karbala and Najaf.

Thanks to this agreement Zain subscribers in Karbala and Najaf will be able to enjoy high-speed internet connectivity and better coverage. Zain network will be the first in both governorates that is equipped to support 4G services- an upgrade that will have a major impact on network applications, providing a comprehensive secure solution that allows bigger bandwidth.

Zain Iraq will be the first operator to cover all areas in Karbala and Najaf with 3G-internet service with better connectivity, higher capacity and data speed, enabling subscribers to enjoy a great communication experience and high-speed data. This step will allow Karbala and Najaf to receive millions of visitors during the Zyara season on Muharram 10th and Alarbainiya.

“At Zain Iraq, we are committed to introduce the latest global technologies and services to our subscribers in Iraq. Modernising and developing our current networks using advanced technologies is a key priority for us to keep pace with the rapid ICT developments, such as the volume of data traffic and enhancing end users experience. It reflects our ongoing effort to offer high quality services catering to the needs of our mobile services subscribers,” said Ali Al-Zahid, CEO, Zain Iraq.

Zain Iraq will be the first operator to link its sites in Karbala and Najaf with fibre optic technology, enhancing and developing its network performance. This step aims at optimising subscribers experience through better connectivity and coverage, meeting the increasing demand on high speed internet services and bigger bandwidth – currently and in the future as anticipated.

Dr Ali Khuwaylidi, Board of Trustees Council president and Council commissioners, Commission of Media and Communications (CMC) in Iraq, said: “We provide support and assess the performance of telecom operators in Iraq by regularly monitoring their operations. We hope their development plans will provide subscribers with the best services.

“The investment made by Zain Iraq today puts the operator on the right track towards developing the telecommunications sector in the country. The partnership specifically serves Zain subscribers in Karbala and Najaf while preparing for the Zyara season.”

This announcement came in parallel with Zain Iraq H1 2018 results. Zain achieved exceptional performance, adding 1.9 million subscribers to its customer base in Iraq, marking a 17% increase, to reach 14.7 million subscribers.

The remarkable growth Zain achieved in the data services sector, drove the company to invest more in upgrading its network performance, catering to the increasing demand for higher speed Internet services.

Thanks to the agreement, Ericsson will support Zain Iraq to upgrade its network, so it can provide bigger bandwidth and better performance.
