Kuwait and US sign deal on cybersecurity cooperation

Salem Muthib Al-Athainah, the Chairman and CEO of Kuwait’s Communication and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA), and Robert Strayer, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Cyber and International Communications and Information Policy, have signed a letter of intent on cooperation in cybersecurity.

The document, inked on the fringes of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah’s visit to the United States, aims to meet the objectives of the Kuwait’s national strategy for cybersecurity, Al-Athainah said Tuesday.

“It will promote sharing the best practices in cybersecurity and build the capacity of national cadres in this regard,” he told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

“It covers all areas of vital information infrastructure, electronic defence systems, response to electronic emergencies and e-crimes, launching cybersecurity centres, joint exercises and visit exchanges,” he disclosed. Al-Athainah lauded the close cooperation between both countries in all areas.

On his part, US Ambassador to Kuwait Lawrence Silverman stressed the importance of the future cooperation in the cybersecurity field. He shed light on the first strategic dialogue held in 2016.

“We said we were going to increase our cooperation on cybersecurity that is exactly what we have done today with the signing,” he said in a similar statement to KUNA.

“This is a very practical cooperation that will make both our information systems more secure,” Silverman added.
