{"id":26871,"date":"2019-06-24T14:44:18","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T13:44:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/?p=26871"},"modified":"2019-06-28T11:40:07","modified_gmt":"2019-06-28T10:40:07","slug":"nigeria-turns-the-tide-on-electronic-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/2019\/06\/24\/nigeria-turns-the-tide-on-electronic-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria turns the tide on electronic waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 11.25pt 0cm\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #333333\">An ambitious new project launched in Lagos is aiming to reform the electronics sector and put an end to the toxic toll improper management of electronic waste in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;text-align: start;margin: 0cm 0cm 11.25pt 0cm\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #333333\">Over half a million tonnes of discarded appliances are processed in the country every year, threatening both the health of people in the informal recycling industry and the nation\u2019s environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;text-align: start;margin: 0cm 0cm 11.25pt 0cm\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #333333\">With backing from the\u00a0Global Environment Facility, the Government of Nigeria has joined forces with\u00a0UN Environment and partners to turn the tide on e-waste, under the Circular Economy Approaches for the Electronics Sector in Nigeria project. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 11.25pt 0cm\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #333333\">Led by the\u00a0National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), the US$15 million initiative will bring together players from government, the private sector and civil society to kickstart a financially self-sustaining circular economy approach for electronics in Nigeria, protecting the environment while creating safe employment for thousands of Nigerians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 11.25pt 0cm\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #333333\">\u201cThis intervention by Global Environment Facility aims to stimulate the development of a sustainable circular economy for electronic products in Nigeria,\u201d said Ibukun Odusote, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 11.25pt 0cm\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #333333\">Naoko Ishii, GEF CEO and Chairperson, added: \u201cTo achieve a world without waste, we must radically rethink our relationship with natural resources and key economic systems.
