Local service provider, Saicom has become one of only five ISPs in South Africa to become Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security (MANRS) compliant, assuring its clients that the Internet is a more secure place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MANRS is a global initiative supported by the Internet Society\nthat aims to reduce some of the most common routing threats associated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur commitment to providing world class services and solutions\nincludes finding ways to comply with the global standards,\u201d said Greg de\nChasteauneuf, CTO at Saicom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis certification adds a layer of routing security and stability\nto our solutions set.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of the compliance to MANRS standards, Saicom has\nimplemented filtering, co-ordination and global validation measures that will\nnot only prevent the propagation of incorrect routing information; facilitate\nglobal operational communication and co-ordination between network operators,\nbut also facilitate validation of routing information on a global scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEven accidental routing errors can have far-reaching impact,\u201d added\nde Chasteauneuf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn June this year, a small company in Northern Pennsylvania\nbecame the preferred path for one of the world\u2019s largest network operators\nVerizon (AS701). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is like routing an eight-lane highway of cars down a small\ndirt road in Zeerust. The Internet came to a grinding halt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While this example was accidental in nature, of more serious\nconcern is that of sovereign nations who are intentionally hijacking parts of\nthe Internet for surveillance purposes, and have been suspected of doing so,\nfor several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By looking for MANRS-compliant infrastructure partners,\nenterprises get increased security and service reliability, at the same time,\neliminating common outages and\/or attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is no longer a case of it, but when route safety will be\ncompromised and it occurs almost daily,\u201d said de Chasteaueuf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRoute hijacking, route leaks, IP address spoofing, and other harmful activities can lead to DDoS attacks, traffic inspection, lost revenue, reputational damage, and more. These incidents are global in scale, with one operator\u2019s routing problems cascading to impact others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
