{"id":30110,"date":"2019-11-12T11:38:21","date_gmt":"2019-11-12T11:38:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/?p=30110"},"modified":"2019-11-13T10:59:46","modified_gmt":"2019-11-13T10:59:46","slug":"altron-karabina-expert-on-what-the-ict-skills-priorities-are-for-south-african-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/2019\/11\/12\/altron-karabina-expert-on-what-the-ict-skills-priorities-are-for-south-african-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"Altron Karabina expert on what the ICT skills priorities are for South African companies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Kerry De Mendonca, Talent Acquisition Lead at Altron Karabina, analyses what the ICT skills priorities are for companies operating in South Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple ICT skills that are prioritised in companies across South Africa and they vary dependent on the organisation\u2019s maturity, size and focus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A common ICT skill focus across companies in South Africa at the\nmoment is the transformation of their leadership tier.&nbsp;There is a shortage\nof African male and most certainly African female skills in ICT leadership\nroles, for example CTO, CIO and architect roles.&nbsp;Closing this gap requires\na strategic initiative to identify high potential individuals in middle\nmanagement positions who want to grow into these leadership seats through\nsuccession planning programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, companies prioritise a matrix of skills when hiring\ncandidates within ICT roles.&nbsp; These skills are aligned to competencies\nthat fall within soft skills, business skills as well as technical skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within soft skills, companies look for people who have sound problem-solving skills, good interpersonal skills, a high work ethic and solid communications skills.&nbsp;In business skills, we look for an understanding of business processes, customer relationship management and project management; and within technical skills, there are multiple specific skills sought after, dependent on the company itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/Kerry-De-Mendonca-web-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/Kerry-De-Mendonca-web-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/Kerry-De-Mendonca-web-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/Kerry-De-Mendonca-web-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/Kerry-De-Mendonca-web.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><figcaption> <strong>Kerry De Mendonca, Talent Acquisition Lead at Altron Karabina<\/strong> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With most companies digitally transforming their businesses to\ndrive optimisation and efficiencies, we see a high demand in software\ndevelopment skills within different programming languages (C# and Java\nappearing the most popular in South Africa at the moment); varying skills in\nbusiness applications such as ERP, web services and transaction processing\nsystems to name a few; and information management skills in the data\nspace.&nbsp;There is also a growing demand for cloud-based services and linked\nskills to deliver against this need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At graduate or entry level, there appears to be a gap in the\nability of candidates to translate their technical skills into practical\nsolutions that solve business problems utilising key soft skills.&nbsp;There\nare questions being raised about how this should be addressed in tertiary\ninstitution curricula, however for now this is a skills development focus for companies\nvia their graduate, intern and learnership programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Irrespective of the level and complexity at which an ICT candidate\nis being employed, most companies want well-rounded individuals who can add\nvalue to their company culture, vision, mission and goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kerry De Mendonca, Talent Acquisition Lead at Altron Karabina, analyses what the ICT skills priorities are for companies operating in South Africa.
