{"id":30321,"date":"2019-11-20T15:44:10","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T15:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/?p=30321"},"modified":"2019-11-22T10:45:16","modified_gmt":"2019-11-22T10:45:16","slug":"dsti-sierra-leones-integrated-gis-portal-wins-us773k-grant-from-bill-melinda-gates-foundation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/africa\/2019\/11\/20\/dsti-sierra-leones-integrated-gis-portal-wins-us773k-grant-from-bill-melinda-gates-foundation\/","title":{"rendered":"DSTI Sierra Leone&#8217;s Integrated GIS Portal wins US$773k grant from Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Bill\n&amp; Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded a US$773,476 grant to the\nDirectorate of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI) in Sierra Leone to\ndevelop an Integrated GIS Portal that will utilise technology, software and\ndevices to collect, label and model data to inform real-time government and\ndevelopment partner decision making. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grant\nwill also seek to strengthen the local ecosystem around human capacity\ndevelopment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis generous support provided by the Bill &amp;\nMelinda Foundation will enable DSTI to use low-cost technology solutions like\nSMS, USSD, interactive voice response and mobile apps to provide citizens with\nreal-time information for timely access and receipt of services, and optimise\nservice delivery specifically in the provision of maternal healthcare\nservices,\u201d said Dr. Moinina David Sengeh, Chief Innovation Officer at DSTI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will further be able to collect and analyse data\nthat will be provided to government service providers to optimize and improve\ntheir services both for supply chain and resource allocation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Integrated Geographic Information System (iGIS)\nPortal is a cross-sectoral spatial data infrastructure and geodatabase and\nlinks diverse geographic information datasets from the Government of Sierra\nLeone (GoSL) and its partners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nFoundation\u2019s support will serve as the seed funding for the scaling of the\nIntegrated GIS Portal and will support the collection of critical data and\ndevelop analyses to promote health, agriculture, environmental, and education\noutcomes,\u201d said Glenna Wilson, Data Engineer, and GIS Portal Project Lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy the project\u2019s completion, the government will have the evidence to efficiently target HCD investment resources towards the most impactful interventions and to effectively coordinate investments by government, development partners, NGOs, and the private sector.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded a US$773,476 grant to the Directorate of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI) in Sierra Leone to develop an Integrated GIS Portal that will utilise technology, software and devices to collect, label and model data to inform real-time government and development partner decision making.
