The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank have approved a \u20ac48.82 million loan to the Government of Burkina Faso for the Yeleen solar plant, intended to boost national power supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yeleen, which is to be implemented under the Bank\u2019s Desert to\nPower (DTP) Initiative, and which will span a period of five years from 2020 to\n2024, is the second project under the DTP initiative in Burkina Faso. The total\nproject cost is estimated at \u20ac136.69 million. The rest of the financing\nfor Yeleen is provided by Agence Fran\u00e7aise de D\u00e9veloppement (AFD), European\nUnion (EU), and Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Nationale d’\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 du Burkina Faso (SONABEL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The electricity access rate in Burkina Faso is one of the lowest\nin Africa at around 21% at national level in 2018. Upon completion, the project\nwill increase and diversify electricity supply through the construction of four\nnew 52 MWc photovoltaic (PV) plants and extend power distribution networks to\nconnect 30,000 new households, or about 200,000 people. It will also contribute\nto the avoidance of 48,000 tCO2eq emissions annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wale Shonibare, the Bank\u2019s Acting Vice-President for Power,\nEnergy, Climate Change & Green Growth said: \u201cThis project will augment the Bank\u2019s\nefforts to ensure inclusive access to energy through improvements in rural\nelectrification, regional interconnections and energy sector reforms. Notably,\nit will increase Burkina Faso\u2019s generation capacity by 15%, which will greatly\nhelp to reduce Burkina Faso\u2019s reliance on fossil fuel imports.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Daniel Schroth, the Bank\u2019s Acting Director for Renewable\nEnergy & Energy Efficiency, also added that the approval would further the\nDesert to Power Initiative\u2019s momentum in line with commitments made at the\nSahel G5 Summit on in Ouagadougou. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWith this project, we are making concrete progress on two of\nthe five priority areas under the Desert to Power initiative which include\nadding new solar generation capacity and strengthening the transmission and\ndistribution networks,\u201d said Schroth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The current project is part of Burkina Faso\u2019s broader 2025 Solar\nProgramme, known as \u2018Yeleen\u2019 with three components: Development of\nphotovoltaic plants (PV) connected to the interconnected national grid; increase\nin the electricity distribution network; and rural electrification by\nmini-grids (isolated) and individual solar systems. The rural electrification Yeleen\nrural electrification project, which aims to increase electricity access in\nBurkina Faso by connecting 150,000 households to solar mini- grids (50,000\nhousehold) and through stand-alone solar kits systems (100,000 households) was\napproved by the Bank in December 2018 with joint financing with EU and GCF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project aligns with Bank\u2019s Country strategy paper for\nBurkina Faso (CSP 2017-2021), its High-5 \u2018Light Up and Power Africa\u2019 initiative,\nand the Bank\u2019s Climate Change plan. Desert to Power initiative aims to\naccelerate economic development by adding solar energy generation capacity of\nup to 10 GW by 2025 through a combination of public and private interventions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
