Mena Migally, Senior Director, MENA at Riverbed, tells Intelligent CIO about the technological trends he expects to see emerging in 2020.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While 2020 marks the start of a new decade,\nmany of the technology trends that have dominated conversations through 2019 – Big\nData, cyber-hunting, IoT, 5G and user experience – will continue to shape IT\nroadmaps as companies begin to take action and look for the impact of their\nstrategic investments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Riverbed Technology, we believe the dawn\nof the new year presents the ideal opportunity to take stock of the\nadvancements made in the year gone by and explore how these will continue to\nevolve in 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital Transformation will radically\nshape business strategies and outcomes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While talk of Digital Transformation has\nbeen on-going for several years now, organisations\u2019 transformation efforts have\nseen mixed results. Even enterprises that started down the road in 2018 and\n2019 have realised that an organisation and its infrastructure cannot be\ncompletely transformed overnight and that it will instead be an on-going\nexercise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality is that many organisations were\nnot equipped for a true Digital Transformation or to embrace SD-WAN. This is\nset to change as we head into 2020. The Digital\nTransformation march will continue to move forward, along with the adoption of\nSD-WAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s an inherent risk for those\nbusinesses that buck the trend. The Amazonification of consumer expectations\nhas reshaped enterprise go-to-market strategies in a huge way by going beyond\njust situating a solution in the cloud. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winners here will be those who can\ndeliver the desired experiences and outcomes at the speed customers demand.\nToday, enterprise customers expect the incredible speed and convenience that\u2019s\ntraditionally been demanded by consumers. They have been shaped, as we all\nhave, by getting what we\u2019ve asked for at a blink-and-you\u2019ll-miss-it level of\nservice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everyone will be able to keep up so\nexpect to see some players merge with others \u2013 or simply fall by the wayside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IoT and 5G will push applications to the\nEdge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no doubt that 2019 was the year of\ncloud in the Middle East. The market\u2019s momentum is only set to increase and we\ncan expect distributed cloud to become the new data centre that truly empowers\nthe Edge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As more organisations start incorporating\nIoT technologies, their applications will need to run at the Edge to ensure\nhigh performance and faster response. With IoT heading to the forefront \u2013 and\nsoon to be enabled by the proliferation of 5G networks \u2013 organisations in 2020\nare starting to think about how to address the new visibility challenges that\nwill stem from the need of Edge applications to communicate back to a\ncentralised point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, the security of that network traffic\nis going to be paramount. There is no getting away from security being at the\ntop of the agenda for organisations’ investments in 2020. It\u2019s going to be\nimperative for organisations to be able to track which devices are\ncommunicating with other devices and determine whether they\u2019re part of a\ndistributed cloud or still being sent back to a consolidated location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Threat Hunting will become a mandatory\nsecurity exercise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sticking with the theme of cybersecurity,\nwe will see an increase in the number of \u2018advanced persistent threats\u2019\nsophisticated, systematic cyberattack programs that continue for an extended\nperiod of time, often orchestrated by a group of skilled hackers. These are the\nhacks that do the most damage to organisations and if a company doesn\u2019t have\nproactive threat detection measures in place, it could be unaware of the attack\nuntil after the damage is done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As networks for\norganisations have grown, they have become like the Roman empire \u2013 big,\nsprawling and hard to defend. Throwing up a \u2018wall\u2019 or\nfirewall, to defend against attacks is less likely to be effective when the\nadvanced persistent threats have multiple ways to attack the cracks in those\nwalls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best way to combat advanced persistent\nthreats is to engage in \u2018cyber-hunting\u2019, the process of proactively and\niteratively searching networks to detect and isolate advanced threats that\nevade existing security solutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As hackers become smarter and find new\nevasive ways to infiltrate a network, organisations in 2020 will begin adopting\nthe proactive cyber-hunting approach to complement traditional reactive threat\nmanagement approaches of installing firewalls, intrusion detection systems and\nSIEM systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The days of data hoarding are over <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proliferation of the cloud and its\nimmense data storage capabilities are double-edged swords for organisations\nthat have been \u2018data hoarding\u2019. As we move into 2020, many organisations will\nrealise that while Big Data has tremendous value, some of that data may be a\nliability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The potential risk of a\nbreach involving sensitive client data is too substantial to a company\u2019s bottom\nline, especially with the emergence of more consumer\ndata protection laws, such as CCPA, coming down the line in 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To combat this, organisations\nwill start reviewing collected data to determine what clearly enhances the\nbusiness\u2019s performance and delete the rest, as the risk is too high to\ncontinue to store customer data without a foreseeable purpose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why these matter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2020 will see many game changing\ntechnologies reach maturity and no doubt, emerging technologies such as AI will\ntake root as they begin to deliver tangible value for businesses. As the\ntechnologies we know and love continue to evolve, they will open up the\npossibility of new applications and use cases capable of enhancing the user\nexperience for customers and employees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
