Teraco has announced that Africa\u2019s largest Internet Exchange\nPoint (IXP) NAPAfrica has reached a landmark with one terabit per second (Tbps)\nof peak traffic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Andrew Owens, Manager of Interconnection and\nPeering at Teraco, this is not only a significant milestone for the exchange,\nbut also for the continent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe NAPAfrica members, including global content and cloud\nproviders, over 250 telecommunication providers, managed service providers and\na growing enterprise base, are the driving force behind achieving this\nmomentous goal,\u201d said Owens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Launched in 2012, NAPAfrica first recorded traffic of\n532Mbps. Eight years later the exchange has reached 1Tbps, showing an\nimpressive 1884 X growth. The exchange started with five members and today has\nin excess of 440 unique ASNs connected from across the world, including 26\nAfrican countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn a relatively short space of time NAPAfrica has become a\nsignificant contributor to the Internet ecosystem within Africa. This was one\nof our ultimate goals, to be of value to our members and to sustainably develop\nthe African Internet ecosystem,\u201d said Owens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
NAPAfrica\u2019s recent growth has been driven by the uptake in\nnetworks and enterprises accessing key content and cloud. In addition to the\ngeneral use of the Internet across Africa visiting popular sites such as\nNetflix, Facebook, YouTube and other key Internet applications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of significance, is the interest shown by South Africa\u2019s\nneighbouring countries, all looking to connect via NAPAfrica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Owens said: \u201cTelcos in countries as far afield as Angola,\nTogo and the Democratic Republic of Congo have joined the exchange. NAPAfrica has\nbecome the Internet hub for Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
