Vodacom, the South African telecoms giant, has agreed to\nreduce the cost of its data offerings by as much as 40%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The move follows a finding that the country\u2019s mobile data\nprices were the highest in the whole of Africa, according to a report issued by\nthe Competition Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In December last year, the watchdog warned both Vodacom and MTN\nthat they would face prosecution if they did not agree to cut data prices\nwithin two months of its finding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cVodacom has agreed to a multi-year substantial reduction of\nmonthly data bundles across the board. Effective from April 1 the price will\ncome down by over 30% across all channels,\u201d said a statement from the South\nAfrican government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The network is not expected to fight the Competition Commission\nbut instead deal with the issues raised by it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a result, Vodacom has agreed to a two-year reduction on its\nmonthly data bundles across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rival telecommunications groups MTN and Telkom are expected\nto follow suit within the next two weeks with their own proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
