Demand for secure online and contactless payments is\nsurging in South Africa on the back of fears around the spread of coronavirus,\nwith many people reluctant to use cash or to touch point of sale\nmachines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the number of confirmed cases increases daily,\ngrowing numbers of retailers are scrambling to get online payment systems in\nplace to meet a spike in demand from customers looking for contactless payment\noptions, said Thomas Pays, the Chief Executive of online payment platform Ozow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said: \u201cWe\u2019ve seen a massive uptake in activity on\nour platform as we support our merchants to continue to trade as normal as\npossible. We\u2019re currently processing around 35-40% more transactions a day than\nwe were a couple of weeks ago, and we\u2019re being inundated by merchants wanting\nto go live on our system as their customers practise social distancing and want\nto avoid touching cash and card machines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The greatest demand is coming from pharmacy groups and\nretailers, who are processing huge volumes of ecommerce orders and deliveries\nfrom their stores. Retailers are also using Ozow for COD deliveries as it\nenables contactless transacting, while ensuring instant payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pays said the current pandemic would accelerate the\nglobal trend away from cash to digital payments, as necessity drives faster\nadoption.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
