Formed through the February 2021 merger of three state-owned Islamic banks, BSI inherited not only expanded scale and reach but also a maze of legacy systems, duplicated records and disconnected data pipelines. By 2024, the bank had successfully transformed this challenge into a competitive advantage, building a single source of truth that directly supported a 22.8% increase in net profit. Central to this Digital Transformation was BSI’s partnership with Cloudera and its comprehensive data platform.

As one of the largest Islamic banks by customer numbers, headquartered in Jakarta and generating more than US$1.2 billion in annual revenue, BSI operates in a highly regulated and competitive environment. Customer expectations for seamless digital services continue to rise while banks face increasing pressure to manage risk, prevent fraud and personalise offerings at scale.

Following the merger, BSI recognised that these goals could not be met with siloed data and redundant systems. The newly unified institution needed a reliable, enterprise-wide view of its information to support confident decision-making.

The merger brought together three banks with different data architectures, reporting standards and operational processes. As a result, BSI encountered common post-merger issues such as data duplication, inconsistent definitions and inefficiencies that slowed reporting and analysis.

Leadership quickly identified data integration as both a risk and an opportunity. Rather than treating data consolidation as a purely technical exercise, BSI framed it as a strategic initiative to create a foundation for long-term growth, innovation and trust in analytics.

This strategic mindset led BSI to Cloudera. Initially starting with a relatively simple infrastructure, the bank worked closely with Cloudera Professional Services to design and implement an on-premises platform capable of unifying its legacy data sources.

The result was an open data lakehouse architecture that consolidated information from across the organisation into a single accurate source of truth.

According to Andy Nugroho, Senior Vice President of Data and Decision Management at BSI, this partnership marked a turning point in the bank’s data journey, enabling a complete transformation of its infrastructure and capabilities.

With unified data in place, BSI was able to streamline access to critical financial and customer information. Business units that previously relied on manual processes and conflicting reports could now work from consistent trusted datasets. This shift reduced operational friction and improved the speed and quality of decision-making across the bank.

Executives gained clearer visibility into performance while analysts and data teams could focus on generating insights rather than reconciling numbers.

At the same time, the bank used customer insights to support personalisation initiatives, tailoring products and services to individual needs and behaviors. These capabilities helped BSI remain competitive, attract new customers and strengthen relationships with existing ones in an increasingly digital banking landscape.

One of the most tangible outcomes of this transformation was the development of automated reports and interactive dashboards. These tools provided near real-time visibility into customer trends, financial performance and growth opportunities.

Decision-makers across the organisation could visualise complex data, explore scenarios and align strategies with confidence. The ability to translate data into actionable insights played a direct role in BSI’s strong financial performance, culminating in a 22.8 percent net profit increase in 2024.

Looking ahead, BSI views its data foundation as a springboard for further innovation. With trusted well-governed data now established, the bank is preparing to expand its use of Artificial Intelligence to drive even greater efficiency and intelligence across operations.

From predictive analytics to more advanced customer engagement models, AI represents the next phase of BSI’s digital evolution. By continuing to invest in modern data architecture and analytics, BSI aims to position itself as the premier Islamic bank globally and one of the most technologically advanced institutions in its sector.

In transforming post-merger complexity into clarity, BSI demonstrates how a strong data strategy, supported by the right technology partner, can deliver measurable business impact. The bank’s experience shows that building a single source of truth is not merely an IT milestone but a catalyst for growth, resilience and sustained competitive advantage.

Bank Syariah Indonesia has transformed fragmented post-merger data into a single source of truth, driving stronger decision-making, advanced analytics and a significant uplift in profitability.
