From an indoor operating station staff controlled the vehicle using real-time video streams transmitted instantly across the secure network.

The trial highlights how reliable low-latency connectivity can transform routine rail yard tasks such as shunting. Traditionally, drivers must walk to the train and switch cabs when repositioning vehicles. Remote Train Operation or RTO allows those manoeuvres to be performed from a control room reducing workload improving safety and increasing operational flexibility.

For remote control to function safely commands must travel instantly while high-resolution camera feeds and vehicle data reach operators without delay. Even milliseconds matter because latency affects reactions precision and safety. Boldyn’s private 5G infrastructure provides the stable secure connection needed to link trains sensors cameras and control systems across challenging depot environments.

The project builds on a partnership agreement signed last year between Deutsche Bahn and Boldyn covering design deployment operation and optimisation of private 5G networks for future rail digitalisation initiatives. The successful test marks an important step toward scalable remote rail operations and wider automation across Germany’s rail network in the years ahead as digital infrastructure continues to evolve and support safer smarter railway operations nationwide for passengers, operators, maintainers and logistics partners alike every day.

Boldyn Networks has powered a breakthrough trial with Deutsche Bahn in Munich demonstrating how private 5G connectivity can enable remote train operations in complex railway environments.
