Unlike a virtual machine, containers do not host a complete operating system, just the applications, settings and storage, so they use very little space and can be created in microseconds.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft and Red Hat have now announced native support for Windows Server containers on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated on <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Azure<\/a>, and SQL Server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMicrosoft and Red Hat are aligned in our commitment to bring enterprise customers the hybrid cloud solutions they need to modernise their businesses as they shift to operate in a cloud-native world,\u201d said John <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/john-gossman-5664952\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gossman<\/a>, Lead Azure Architect at Microsoft. \u201cToday, we\u2019re extending this commitment as we again join forces to bring fully interoperable solutions that simplify container adoption and help customers make the most of their hybrid cloud strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the partnership expansion, Red Hat OpenShift will be the first container application platform built from the open source <a href=\"https:\/\/kubernetes.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kubernetes<\/a> project to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linux.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Linux<\/a> and Windows Server container workloads in a single platform across a hybrid cloud. This is expected to be available as a \u201ctechnology preview\u201d in spring 2018. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"3 Ways Cloud Can Help Business - Ep 1 - Grow Faster\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/efgMo5Jnfos?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated, a container platform as a cloud service managed by Red Hat, will be made available on Azure, Microsoft\u2019s cloud service. The move allows IT teams to easily manage the infrastructure associated with cloud-based applications and containers, freeing them up to help their companies grow rather than micro-managing resources. Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated on Microsoft Azure is expected to be available early next year.<\/p>\n<p>The two companies also plan to deliver support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux workloads on <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/overview\/azure-stack\/\" target=\"_blank\">Azure Stack<\/a>, a Microsoft service that lets companies enjoy the benefits of cloud computing in their own, on-premise servers.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Microsoft and Red Hat are planning to make <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/07\/announcing-sql-server-on-linux\/\" target=\"_blank\">SQL Server for Linux<\/a> \u2013 one of the world\u2019s leading relational database management systems \u2013 available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift.    \t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft and open-source software company Red Hat have expanded their partnership to help more firms use containers in their own servers and in the cloud.
