Phone and broadband customers in the UK must be warned when\ntheir current contract is ending and what they could save by signing up to a\nnew deal, under Ofcom rules that came into force on February 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Around 20 million customers are already out of contract \u2013\nincluding 8.8 million broadband customers \u2013 and many are paying more than they\nneed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ofcom research reveals that every day, 25,000 broadband\ncustomers come to the end of their contract \u2013 usually leading to an automatic\nprice rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People can earn big savings on their monthly bills if they\ntake advantage of discounts available when signing a new deal. But 16% of\nbroadband customers don\u2019t know if they are in contract, rising to 21% of\nover-55s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, Ofcom is introducing rules to ensure people can see\nwhether they are on the best deal. Phone, broadband and pay-TV companies will\nhave to warn customers between 10 and 40 days before their contract comes to an\nend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lindsey Fussell, Ofcom\u2019s Consumer Group Director, said:\n\u201cMillions of people are out of contract right now and paying more than they\nneed to. These new rules make it easier to grab a better deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
