Prodesp and Embratel partner to offer satellite Internet on the Brazilian Northern Coast

Prodesp, the technology company of the São Paulo State Government, and Embratel have partnered to provide satellite Internet signals on the Brazilian Northern Coast.

The initiative guarantees connectivity for the services regarding new copies of national ID cards (RG in Portuguese) and National driver’s Licenses (CNH in Portuguese). These documents are being issued free of charge to the population affected by the extreme rains in São Sebastião during Carnival.

Gileno Gurjão Barreto, President, Prodesp, said: “The work of the Mobile Poupatempo, a program aimed at facilitating access to information and public services, in São Sebastião was an immediate concern of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas to guarantee citizenship to the population and quick access to registration in social programs.

“The program has already concluded 1,070 RG and CNH consultations at the desk and the self-service totems in seven days. So far, there have been 2,600 consultations in the cities affected by the catastrophe.”

Embratel is one of the principal IT and Telecom services providers in Brazil. The initiative, which also involves the participation of the operator Claro, ensures the operation of two satellite connectivity antennas in the city most affected by the disaster.

One antenna is at the Verdescola Institute, and the other operates in the Poupatempo Mobile truck parked near the headquarters. Embratel has also provided laptops and printers for the services that provide new documents to the population.

Maria Teresa Lima, Executive Director for the Government, Embratel, said: “Embratel is providing 50 Mbps of satellite Internet for social assistance to people affected by the storms.”
