{"id":3487,"date":"2015-10-18T17:50:14","date_gmt":"2015-10-18T17:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/me\/?p=3487"},"modified":"2015-10-18T17:50:14","modified_gmt":"2015-10-18T17:50:14","slug":"omans-shura-elections-count-on-kodak-alaris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/me\/2015\/10\/18\/omans-shura-elections-count-on-kodak-alaris\/","title":{"rendered":"Oman\u2019s Shura elections count on Kodak Alaris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kodak Alaris is providing scanning systems for the ballot count in next week\u2019s Shura elections in Oman, as the region\u2019s document scanner market booms, writes <em>Eliot Beer<\/em>, Intelligent CIO&#8217;s Editorial Consultant at GITEX Technology Week in Dubai, UAE.<\/p>\n<p>The firm is working with a local partner to supply the system for scanning and reading the votes, according to David Whitton, eastern cluster manager, document scanning, at Kodak Alaris: \u201cThat\u2019s based on [information capture firm] IBML technology which sorts the ballot papers. We\u2019re using intelligent character recognition in a unique way for the Omani market \u2013 this is an open-text engine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kodak Alaris also counts the UAE\u2019s Emirates NBD as a customer, with its scanning systems in all 140 of the bank\u2019s branches across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Its main focus at Gitex is to show off its web capture systems, which allow scanning to be integrated into other business processes more seamlessly. Firms can also provision and manage Kodak Alaris\u2019 software remotely, saving on the need to provide IT support services at many locations.<\/p>\n<p>The firm has seen its sales grow significantly in recent years, said Whitton: \u201c[In the first half of the year] we sold 17,000 units \u2013 Fujitsu probably sold about 19,000. We used to be 10,000 units behind them \u2013 we\u2019re catching up, and we\u2019ll probably overtake them fairly quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Whitton, Infosource data on the regional scanner market shows a growth rate of 35% for H1: \u201cIn the first half of last year in the Middle East there were 39,000 devices sold \u2013 this year it\u2019s 53,000. It\u2019s a mature market in Europe, but in the Middle East there\u2019s still a lot of paper to process, and a lot of backlog conversion jobs to be done before we get to a more mature and stable market state \u2013 so I think there\u2019s plenty of growth left in the market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been coming here since 1999 \u2013 everyone\u2019s always been saying the market will commoditise and decline, and it never quite does,\u201d he added.    \t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kodak Alaris is providing scanning systems for the ballot count in next week\u2019s Shura elections in Oman, as the region\u2019s document scanner market booms, writes Eliot Beer, Intelligent CIO&#8217;s Editorial Consultant at GITEX Technology Week in Dubai, UAE.
