What should the priority be for a new CIO? Daniel Sanchez Reina, Senior Director Analyst, Gartner, says CIOs must focus on three actions in the first 100 days. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new CIO\nmust use the first 100 days to build rapport with the C-suite and demonstrate\nleadership and understanding for the organisation\u2019s business goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\nshould be the first priority as a new CIO? Getting to know the IT\ninfrastructure and systems? Making yourself familiar with goals and\nexpectations? All important tasks, but not the place to start. The very first thing a new CIO needs to do is strategically build\nrapport with the CEO and other C-level members to be perceived as a trusted\nally of the executive team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CIOs\nstill are at a disadvantage on the executive team because their colleagues\noften don\u2019t know exactly how IT contributes to the overall strategy. This\ncan lead to an isolated position that makes it harder to move projects forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCIOs\nwill not accelerate their rapport with the C-level just by meeting their\ndefault expectations for the CIO role,\u201d said Daniel Sanchez Reina, Senior\nDirector Analyst, Gartner. \u201cSuccess requires that you do\nthings that nobody expects from you – and that you do them well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To\u00a0successfully\u00a0integrate\u00a0themselves into the leadership team within the first 100 days, CIOs must focus on three actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Action\nNo. 1: Speak finance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditionally, the C-level member closest to the CEO is the CFO and the two of them tend to set the financial agenda on their own. Usually, the only thing they expect financially from the IT department is to reduce costs – a dangerous\u00a0pitfall for new CIOs\u00a0and an amazing opportunity to demonstrate that they don\u2019t only understand IT but also business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CIOs\nshouldn\u2019t limit themselves to the IT perspective but should also think about\nhow to become a top-line growth contributor in a broad way. Spend time with the\nCFO, understand the burning financial topics of the company and open a\ndiscussion about how the IT organisation can contribute to overall organisation\ngrowth. Make sure that any IT initiative is directly linked to\nrevenue-generation goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Action\nNo. 2: Be a pioneer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the\u00a02018 CEO Survey, 78% of CEOs consider their companies either pioneers or fast followers when it comes to business innovation. And they will expect a new CIO to take on a leadership role when it comes to pioneering\u00a0business transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demonstrate\npioneer spirit with a breakthrough document. This is a strategic, enterprise wide,\nhigh-level operational inventory on what actions and initiatives can be taken\nto become a pioneering or fast-follower organisation. It is important for the\nCIO to draft this document in tandem with each member of the C-suite based on\nthe overall company strategy – avoid IT-specific conversations when discussing\nit with C-level colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Action\nNo. 3: Shape the workplace culture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culture\nis the set of mindsets and practices of an organisation. A growing number of\nCEOs want to change the organisation\u2019s culture to become more competitive in\nthe new world of digital business. However, culture change is not just about\nintroducing new tools and processes – it\u2019s about changing workforce behaviours\nin a way that is neither overwhelming nor frightening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a new\nCIO won\u2019t know a lot about a company yet, tackling the entire culture is\nimpossible. However, it\u2019s important to work with your peers to identify one or\ntwo behaviours that the organisation needs to change to successfully fulfil the\nactions of the breakthrough document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe best motto is probably \u2018Think big and start small.\u2019 Pick a less complex initiative for behavioural change, and don\u2019t be too ambitious in the beginning or you might be seen as reckless. Try to use\u00a0culture hacks\u00a0to accelerate the adoption of new behaviours across the organisation,\u201d said Sanchez Reina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
