When the University of Dammam needed to expand its data centre, its major goal was to boost efficiency in IT operations and maintenance. Given Saudi Arabia\u2019s challenging temperatures, another crucial requirement for the institution was energy efficiency. It turned to Vertiv to supply a new data centre that offered maintainable infrastructure with an expected availability of 99.982%.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the University of Dammam continues to grow and develop\nits academic capabilities, its data centre\nneeded to be expanded accordingly. Along with supporting the increased use of\ndata, the university\u2019s key goal was to boost efficiency in IT operations and\nmaintenance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address these growing demands, the University of Dammam\nfound Vertiv to be the ideal partner for their new, state-of-the-art data centre. achieving energy\nefficiency in a hot climate the university of Dammam\nwas looking for a new data centre solution to be able to face\nthe growing IT demand and optimise the numerous computer rooms distributed\nacross its various campuses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the data centre\nhad to serve the University Hospital which was recently expanded to an 11-storey\nbuilding with a capacity of over 600 beds. Given Saudi\nArabia\u2019s challenging temperatures, the institution\u2019s most crucial requirement\nwas energy efficiency. A reduced footprint, rapid deployment,\nreliability and sustainability were also among the university\u2019s primary needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The main objective of building\nthis data centre is to increase efficiency by utilising\nresources in smart and innovative ways,” says Dr Saad AlAmri, CIO\nfor the University of Dammam. \u201cVertiv has a full range of highly advanced\nsolutions and a strong local presence in Saudi Arabia, that helped us achieve\nour goals.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new data centre,\nprovided by Vertiv and certified by the Uptime Institute as a Tier III\nfacility, is powered by six Liebert80-NET UPS\nunits. These are configured to offer up to 1000 kVA of dual power and multiple\nindependent distribution paths to the IT equipment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system design provides a concurrently maintainable\ninfrastructure with an expected availability of 99.982%. To be able to face the\nextreme climate conditions of up to 52\u00b0C, the thermal management equipment is\nmeticulously arranged deploying Vertiv SmartAisle <\/a>containment, coupled with Liebert PDX and Liebert\nCRV units. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outfitted with more than a hundred Vertiv Kn\u00fcrr DCM\nHeavy-Duty Racks and Liebert MPH power distribution units (PDU), the Vertiv\nSmartAisle containment allows for optimised air flow in a reduced footprint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the Liebert MPH is a flexible rack PDU which\noffers the industry\u2019s leading operating temperatures by monitoring the\nreceptacle as well as the strip and environmental inputs, i.e, temperature and\nhumidity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This detail is fundamental in ensuring system availability\ndespite the harsh ambient temperatures. To further minimise data centre\nenergy consumption, six Liebert PDX and four Liebert CRV direct expansion\nsystems are installed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 These ultimate\nthermal management units, coupled with the Vertiv SmartAisle containment, are\nable to cool servers while keeping power usage effectiveness (PUE) to a\nminimum, going beyond customer expectations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University of Dammam also highlighted the need for a\ndata centre\ninfrastructure management (DCIM) tool that could control the entire\ninfrastructure. With the Vertiv SiteScan Web monitoring system, the university\ncan now take advantage of having a centralised overview as well as monitor and\ncontrol any piece of critical support equipment remotely and in real-time,\nwhether it\u2019s located in the next room or in another facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to this new Tier III facility, the University of\nDammam is now able to efficiently manage the growing influx of data and provide\nthousands of users with a highly available and reliable IT service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salah ElShekeil, Network and Information Security Manager\nfor the University of Dammam, said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the key parameters in order for this project to\nsucceed, is the power usage effectiveness. Vertiv SmartAisle containment, the\nVertiv SiteScan monitoring solution, coupled with all the power, cooling and\nrack equipment provided, proved to be fundamental in reaching our PUE target.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
