Egypt\u2019s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has signed a MoU with Japan\u2019s Assistive Technology Development Organisation (ATDO) to carry out projects to improve the lives of disabled people.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in\nEgypt has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan\u2019s Assistive Technology <\/a>Development Organisation (ATDO) to work together for the\nbenefit of disabled people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim is to enhance co-operation to achieve the digital\ninclusion of people with disabilities and develop a comprehensive strategy\nthrough the establishment of a joint centre for\nexcellence in universal design and Assistive Technology at the National Academy\nof Information Technology for Persons with Disabilities (NAID).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is in addition to collaborating in establishing and\nimplementing universal design and Assistive Technology standards, especially\nthose supporting Arabic, thus facilitating access to animated images and\ninclusion of people with intellectual, cognitive or psychosocial disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The signing was witnessed by Amr Talaat, the Minister of\nCommunications and Information Technology. He underlined that this partnership\ncomes within the framework of empowering and integrating disabled people to be\nactive members of society, adding that he looks forward to a fruitful co-operation\nbetween NAID and ATDO in carrying out value-added projects to improve the lives\nof disabled people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hiroshi Kawamura, ATDO Vice President, stated that the MoU\nwill help promote co-operation between Egypt and Japan in Assistive Technology\nand disabled people\u2019s digital inclusion through the establishment of the centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MoU was signed by the ICT Minister\u2019s Advisor for Social\nResponsibility and Services and NAID Executive Director, Abeer Shakweer, and\nKawamura, in the presence of a number of officials from the Egypt office of the\nJapan International Co-operation Agency (JICA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MoU provides for co-operation in setting and implementing\nhigh accessibility training standards and research and development (R&D) in\nArtificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, Internet of Things (IoT) and other\nemerging technologies to serve Japanese and Arabic speaking disabled people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is in addition to using AI to develop screen reader\nfacilities (converting text to speech) for Japanese and Arabic speaking disabled\npeople, as well as supporting and facilitating communication and collaboration\nbetween Egyptian and Japanese researchers, innovators, start-ups, companies and entities specialising\nin universal design and Assistive Technology areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the MoU provides for co-operation in localising\nadvanced Assistive Technology in Japanese, promoting capacity building and\ntransferring knowledge in ICT access, comprehensive design and Assistive\nTechnology. This is in addition to carrying out training, capacity building and\nskills development programmes between Japanese ICT institutes, training centres, universities and NAID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MoU comes out of MCIT\u2019s keenness to establish\npartnerships with international entities to achieve its strategy for empowering\ndisabled people. It also comes in light of the distinct ties with Japan and\nATDO\u2019s exceptional expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ATDO was founded in 2006. It has achieved international\ncontributions in accessible ICT R&D, meeting disabled people and seniors\u2019\nneeds and achieving social integration.
