With the widespread\nadoption of hybrid multi-cloud as the de facto architecture for enterprise\ncustomers, organisations everywhere are under tremendous pressure to modernise\ntheir infrastructure and to deliver tangible business value around\ndata-intensive applications and workloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, organisations are shifting from on-premises environments<a> <\/a>to using public cloud services, building private clouds, and moving from disk to flash in data centres-sometimes concurrently. These transformations open the door to enormous potential, but they also introduce the unintended consequence of increased IT complexity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"270\" height=\"402\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/01\/Atish-Gude-Headshot2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/01\/Atish-Gude-Headshot2.png 270w, https:\/\/www.intelligentcio.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/01\/Atish-Gude-Headshot2-201x300.png 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><figcaption><strong> <em>Atish Gude, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), NetApp,<\/em> <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We predict that a demand for simplicity and customisability\nwill be the number one factor that drives IT purchasing decisions in 2020.\nVendors will need to offer modern, flexible technologies with the choice of how\nto use and to consume those technologies so that customers can keep pace with\ntheir evolving business models. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As IT departments strive to de-emphasise maintenance\nand hardware, to reduce overheads, and to adopt pay-as-you-go models,\nsimplicity and choice will be crucial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Achieving this simplicity will serve as the foundation\nfor companies as they navigate the exciting technological trends that we\nidentify in the following sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. As the advent of 5G makes AI-driven Internet of\nThings (IoT) a reality, Edge Computing environments are primed to become even\nmore disruptive than cloud was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In preparation for the widespread emergence of 5G,\nlower-cost sensors and maturing AI applications will be used to build\ncompute-intensive Edge environments. This effort will lay the groundwork for\nhigh-bandwidth, low-latency AI-driven IoT environments with the potential for\nhuge innovation and disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advent of 5G is what AI-driven IoT has been\nwaiting for. It will take a few more years for 5G data technology to spread\nacross the Middle East. However, 2020 will see many players in the technology\nindustry and business community invest in building Edge Computing environments\nto support the reality of AI-driven IoT. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These environments will make possible new use cases\nthat rely on intelligent, instantaneous, and autonomous decision-making, with\nlow-latency, high-bandwidth capabilities. This evolution will bring us to a\nworld where the Internet will work on our behalf-without even having to ask. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This AI-driven IoT innovation, however, will depend on\na massive prioritisation of Edge Computing, further disrupting IT\ninfrastructures and data management priorities. As Edge\ndevices move beyond home devices (such as connected thermostats and speakers)\nand become more far-reaching (such as connected solar farms), more data centres\nwill be placed at the Edge. Also, platforms such as Artificial\nIntelligence for IT operations (AIOps) will be necessary to help monitor\ncomplex environments across the Edge, the core and the cloud. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Hardware-based composable architecture will have\nless short-term potential against commodity hardware and software-based\ninfrastructure virtualisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continued improvements in commodity hardware\nperformance, software-based virtualisation and microservice software\narchitectures will eliminate much of the performance advantage of proprietary\nhardware-based composable architectures, relegating them to niche data centre\nroles soon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hardware-based composable architecture is being hyped\nas the next evolution of hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI). This architecture\nenables CPUs, networking cards, workload accelerators, and storage resources to\nbe distributed across a rack-scale architecture and to be connected with\nlow-latency PCIe-based switching. And although composable architecture does\nhave potential, standardisation has been slow, and adoption has been even\nslower. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, software-based virtualisation of storage,\ncombined with software-based (but hardware-accelerated) compute and networking\nvirtualisation solutions, offers much of the flexibility of hardware-based\ncomposable architectures today with lower cost and consistently increasing\nperformance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, attempts to build a true hardware-based\nrack-scale computing model will no doubt continue, and the space will continue\nto evolve quickly.
