Technologists have recognised the need to build on existing monitoring capabilities and bring together disconnected tools to generate unified visibility into availability and performance across their IT environment.

Joe Byrne, Executive CTO, Cisco AppDynamics

The latest report from AppDynamics, The Journey to Observability, reveals that the transition to full-stack observability is now a priority for 93% of organisations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The reasons for full-stack observability are widely understood. UAE technologists need new solutions and techniques to overcome the increased complexity of IT infrastructure and to meet soaring customer expectations for exceptional digital experiences. The accelerated deployment of microservices and container solutions over the past 12-24 months has exacerbated the need for technologists to be able to monitor cloud-native environments alongside legacy on-premise architecture.

Full-stack observability provides technologists with unified, real-time visibility into availability and performance across the IT stack for compute, storage, network and public Internet, from customer facing applications through to back-end infrastructure. It empowers IT teams to quickly and easily identify anomalies, understand dependencies and fix issues before they impact digital experiences for customers and employees. And when this performance data is connected to business outcomes, technologists can analyse issues and prioritise their actions based on potential impact to the business.

Interestingly, the new research suggests a significant shift in attitude towards full-stack observability. Whereas 12 months ago, the general feeling among technologists in the Emirates was one of uncertainty and some trepidation about the size and complexity of the challenge ahead, there is now an overriding sense of positivity and confidence surrounding full-stack observability. In fact, almost all (95%) of surveyed regional technologists report some level of confidence that their organisation will reach its full-stack observability goals in 2022.

Technologists are feeling good about full-stack observability and here are five reasons why:

They made great progress over the course of the last year

After careful consideration of the need for greater visibility into IT availability and performance, plans were finalised and talk turned to action during 2021. More than half of UAE organisations (55%) started out on the journey to full-stack observability and a further 38% are planning to do so in the next 12 months. This means that by the end of 2022, a remarkable 93% of UAE organisations will be somewhere along the journey to full-stack observability.

This is a significant milestone in the overall transition to full-stack observability. Rather than being a vision for the future, technologists are now seeing full-stack observability as a reality, something that they can genuinely achieve over the next few years.

They are seeing tangible benefits from greater visibility into IT performance

Many regional organisations are already seeing tangible results from their efforts last year, with 94% of the country’s technologists reporting greater visibility across their IT stack over the previous 12 months.

And perhaps most importantly, where organisations have achieved improved visibility, they are enjoying a broad range of benefits, both technical and commercial. These include increased productivity in the IT department, with technologists having to spend less time identifying anomalies and understanding dependencies in order to fix issues. This consequently results in lower operational costs because issues are being addressed more quickly and efficiently. Businesses are also seeing better cross-team collaboration because they now have a single source of truth for data, rather than working in silos with their own disconnected monitoring tools.

Another advantage and a big win for technologists, is a reduction in the amount of firefighting. The constant pressure that technologists have felt over the past couple of years, to identify and resolve the issues that could do real damage to end-user experience, is starting to be alleviated. And this means that they’re beginning to find time to see the bigger picture. They’re able to focus on more rewarding, strategic work, whether that be launching innovative projects or enhancing customer experience.

They are getting the backing and resources they need from the business

One of the most revealing findings in the research is the fact that 99% of UAE technologists report that their wider business has been supportive of their efforts to implement full-stack observability during 2021 and has consequently made available the necessary budget and resources.

Evidently, business leaders have realised the need for full-stack observability and they are also seeing the benefits that it is already delivering. This represents a marked change since the beginning of 2021, when many technologists were still trying to build a business case for investment and struggling to convince business leaders of the urgent need for unified visibility into IT availability and performance.

They have a clear roadmap to success for 2022

UAE technologists know that there is still a lot of work to be done in order to achieve their vision for full-stack observability within their organisation. They know that it will take time and sustained effort.

However, what’s really encouraging is the fact that nearly all businesses have defined a strategy for full-stack observability and technologists are fully aware of what needs to be done in order to hit their targets for 2022.

This includes a strong focus on bringing in people with the right skills to support and accelerate the transition to full-stack observability, with technologists recognising the need for specialist skill sets to monitor availability and performance in the cloud, particularly with the growing shift to OpenTelemetry – a specific telemetry framework for modern environments.

Other priorities include introducing the cultural and structural changes required to move to full-stack observability and instilling the right processes and frameworks to ensure the smooth and seamless deployment of new solutions. And technologists will also be looking to identify the right technology vendor to support them on their journey to full-stack observability, one that can deliver a true end-to-end solution which includes application monitoring, security, workload optimisation and financial cloud cost optimisation.

They are confident in the ability of full-stack observability to deliver game-changing results

The final reason for optimism among the region’s technologists when it comes to full-stack observability, is arguably the most important. These technologists and business leaders too, have been able to sample the benefits that full-stack observability can bring. And now they’re eager for more.

Technologists are now genuinely excited about the benefits that full-stack observability can deliver to their organisation from both an IT and business performance perspective and 92% believe that the shift to full-stack observability will be transformational for their business.

Across organisations in the UAE, technologists are determined to capitalise on the momentum they’ve built up over the last year and to take advantage of the fantastic position they now find themselves in. 93% of technologists state that 2022 will be a crucial year on their journey towards full-stack observability, as they look to bring together existing monitoring capabilities and implement new solutions to get visibility into new cloud-native environments.

The journey to full-stack observability is gaining momentum and UAE technologists are right to be feeling confident and excited about what they can achieve in 2022.

In the pursuit to overcome the complexities of IT infrastructures, organisations are turning to full-stack observability solutions.
