The findings reveal a widening gap between business ambitions and IT readiness, raising concerns about wasted investments, stalled innovation and increased cybersecurity risks.

An elite group of more than 100 respondents, dubbed “Innovation Leaders,” demonstrate how modern infrastructure and targeted investment can drive innovation.

Key insights include:

78% of organisations plan to increase GenAI investment, while 73% view agentic AI as critical to competitiveness

Only 36% say they are ready to support large-scale AI workloads

82% of executives view cloud and IT as profit centres, yet fewer than half are fully satisfied with ROI on cloud, automation and GenAI

Most are ill-equipped for modern cyberthreats, with only 14% prepared for post-quantum cryptography

85% describe their cybersecurity posture as reactive despite rising downtime costs

“The next wave of technological disruption is already underway yet many organisations are still operating on outdated foundations and processes,” said Manju Naglapur, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cloud, Applications and Infrastructure Solutions, Unisys. “To fully realise the potential of technologies like generative and agentic AI, organisations need to modernise their infrastructure, align IT and business priorities and adopt a more proactive approach to cybersecurity.”

Emerging tech seen as essential to competitiveness

Nearly three-quarters of executives warn that failing to adopt agentic AI could create competitive risk. Among Innovation Leaders, 82% already allocate more than 6% of IT budgets to GenAI-enabled data management. Across all respondents, 78% intend to increase GenAI spend, signalling confidence in its ability to drive innovation and sharpen advantage.

Infrastructure gaps persist

Despite increased investment, infrastructure shortfalls remain. The same challenges cited in Unisys’s 2023 survey – outdated systems, talent shortages and poor IT-business alignment – continue to hinder adoption. Confidence in supporting large-scale GenAI workloads is at 36%, with readiness even lower for quantum computing (32%) and edge computing (34%). Only 35% of IT environments support augmented or virtual reality.

Security risks intensify

The cloud readiness gap not only slows innovation but increases exposure to security and financial risk. Seventeen percent of organisations experienced a breach in the past year, with downtime costs of up to US$500,000 per hour. Just 14% are prepared for post-quantum cryptography. While 62% are adopting or planning to adopt Zero Trust models, 61% prioritise cyber recovery and only 43% have implemented AI-based security measures.

Unisys concludes that closing infrastructure and security gaps is essential to realising the full value of emerging technologies.

Unisys has released a global report on how organisations are adapting IT strategies to support emerging technologies such as generative AI (GenAI), agentic AI and quantum computing.
