Intel and NVIDIA strike AI, PC chip partnership with US$5 billion stock deal

Intel will manufacture custom CPUs and system-on-chips integrating NVIDIA GPUs, as NVIDIA invests US$5 billion in Intel stock.

NVIDIA and Intel Corporation have announced a wide-ranging partnership to co-develop datacenter and PC products, combining Intel’s x86 CPUs with NVIDIA’s AI and accelerated computing platforms.

Under the deal, Intel will design and manufacture custom x86 CPUs for NVIDIA’s datacenter platforms and integrate NVIDIA RTX GPU chiplets into new x86 system-on-chips for personal computing. The collaboration will use NVIDIA NVLink to connect the companies’ technologies.

NVIDIA will also invest US$5 billion in Intel common stock at US$23.28 per share, pending regulatory approvals and closing conditions.

“AI is powering a new industrial revolution and reinventing every layer of the computing stack – from silicon to systems to software,” said NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang.

“This collaboration tightly couples NVIDIA’s AI stack with Intel’s CPUs and the x86 ecosystem.”

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said: “Intel’s platforms, process technology and manufacturing will complement NVIDIA’s AI leadership to enable new breakthroughs for the industry. We appreciate the confidence NVIDIA has placed in us with this investment.”
