GreenSquare has announced that the first stage of its SYD1 data centre campus in Norwest Business Park, Western Sydney, is now operational, following the adaptive reuse of a data centre originally opened in 1995.
Delivered in eight months, the site has been transformed to support high-density AI workloads, incorporating liquid-to-chip cooling and modern infrastructure designed for performance, efficiency and long-term reliability.
SYD1’s first customer is NASDAQ-listed NVIDIA Cloud Partner, Sharon AI, which will deploy approximately 8,200 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs at the facility, representing a significant deployment of NVIDIA HGX B300 infrastructure in Australia.
GreenSquare adaptively reused the original building, retaining the existing slab and much of the structure rather than demolishing and rebuilding. The data halls were relocated to the ground floor, enabling the facility to accommodate latest-generation, high-density compute without additional structural reinforcement. This increased IT capacity within the original building footprint by 275%, while substantially reducing structural carbon.
“We saw an opportunity to give a 30-year-old data centre a completely new purpose,” said GreenSquare Chief Technology Officer, Joshua Martens. “By rethinking the building’s configuration, introducing prefabricated systems design and using the latest technology to reduce carbon, we’ve created a facility that can support some of today’s most demanding compute requirements while using resources far more efficiently.”
SYD1 was designed for energy and water efficiency, with a projected power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.20 and potable water usage effectiveness (WUE) of less than 0.1 litres per kilowatt-hour, both below the NSW Government guideline benchmarks of 1.25 and 1.0, respectively.
