Puerto Williams becomes the southernmost city in the world with a 5G connection

Entel has delivered 5G connectivity to Puerto Williams – the southernmost city on the planet.

This milestone is part of the conclusion of the company’s first phase of its 5G project, which has facilitated 270 communities throughout Chile, from Arica to Puerto Williams, in the Magallanes Region, to enjoy its benefits.

The first video call was made between Puerto Williams and Arica, located 5,600 kilometers away. Fifth grade students from the Donald McIntyre Griffiths High School in Puerto Williams and students from different high schools in Arica talked and were able to virtually see iconic postcards from both cities.

Juan Carlos Muñoz, Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, said: “We are seeing how the development of telecommunications allows girls and boys, young people, adults and the elderly, who live in the southernmost part of Chile, to have the same possibilities as a person in Santiago, Arica and even the United States.

“To have access to the digital world is to have access to knowledge, education, telemedicine and a series of services that significantly improve people’s quality of life, therefore, no one can be left out.”

Entel has become the first operator to complete 100% deployment of the first stage of its 5G network nationwide.
