Marcus Granadeiro, CEO, Construtivo

What would you describe as your most memorable achievement?

In terms of technology, a memorable achievement for me was creating a pipeline for developing our cloud collaboration platform, Colaborativo, which is now in its fourth generation.

I succeeded with the solution created within a highly competitive environment involving multinational companies and changes throughout the engineering ecosystem.

What first made you think of a career in technology?

I believe I entered a career in technology because of my enthusiasm and passion for solving problems, seeking solutions and seeing them implemented and generating results.

What style of management philosophy do you employ in your current position?

Search for a management style with much freedom, but always aiming for team responsibility and commitment. For me, transparency is fundamental to achieving this goal, leading by example and not just words.

What do you think is the current hot technology conversation topic?

In our field, engineering and construction, the most important topic is information. The goal is to provide the exact data, neither more nor less, to those who need to decide at the right moment.

How do you deal with stress and relax outside of the office?

I feel that moments of complete disconnection from the office are necessary. During the week, I have these moments when I study music and play guitar. On weekends, I like to go to the beach and have zero contact with my cell phone. Since the infrastructure team is in the office, monitoring operations, I can relax.

If you could go back and change one career decision, what would it be?

I believe I should have studied more languages and started learning other languages earlier than I did. Mastering a foreign language and being fluent can be very helpful in a career, as one thing is being able to communicate, and another is speaking like a native.

What do you currently identify as the top investment areas in your industry?

Security is a point that is in high demand, regardless of the technologies associated with Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes.

What are the specific challenges of the region when implementing new technologies in Latin America?

There is a cultural issue in the lack of planning and long-term vision. I see many investments barred because of not having a Return on Investment (ROI) in the short term.

In addition, we also have the issue that everyone wants to innovate, but no one wants to make mistakes, fail or take risks, even though these are intrinsic factors in the innovation process.

What changes have you seen in your job role in the last year, and how do you think they will develop in the next 12 months?

There is a greater professionalization in the field, with IT being considered a management element rather than just a project executor. I believe this is a trend.

What advice would you give someone aspiring to a C-level position in your industry?

A person with a background in technology should dedicate themself to understanding and learning about business, as well as management because without a consolidated strategic view of the business, no technician will reach or consolidate at a C-level position.
