Liberty Costa Rica and Ericsson have launched the first commercial 5G sites across key regions – accelerating the country’s path to nationwide coverage expected in 2026.
The rollout follows a strategic 2025 agreement to deploy Costa Rica’s first 5G Standalone network, marking a major step in national Digital Transformation.
The network is already live for thousands of users and will expand in phases to reach more communities, businesses and essential services. Early performance shows download speeds above 1 Gbps and uploads exceeding 100 Mbps, enabling seamless streaming, rapid downloads and low latency applications such as cloud services, video conferencing and immersive technologies.
Deployment uses both 3.5 GHz and 700 MHz spectrum to enhance capacity, improve indoor coverage and ensure consistent connectivity. The network also supports Fixed Wireless Access, bringing high speed internet to homes and enterprises in areas with limited fiber or cable infrastructure.
The initial rollout prioritizes Guanacaste, the Central Pacific and the Northern Zone, strengthening connectivity in tourism driven regions that contribute significantly to GDP and employment. Enhanced mobile experiences will support local commerce, visitor services and job creation.
