Guatemala has become Chunghwa Telecom’s launchpad into Latin America after the Taiwanese carrier opened a Guatemala City operation, betting that rising demand for digital infrastructure, cybersecurity and enterprise connectivity will create a new regional growth market.
The launch of Chunghwa Telecom Global Inc., Guatemala pushes the company beyond its established US footprint and gives it a base for targeting government and enterprise customers across Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
The expansion puts Guatemala, Central America’s largest economy, at the heart of that strategy. Government Digital Transformation programmes, private-sector modernisation and supply-chain investment are driving demand for resilient networks, Cloud services and cybersecurity infrastructure.
Chunghwa Telecom also plans to use the operation to support Taiwanese companies expanding across the Americas, positioning Guatemala as a bridge between its North American network and emerging Latin American markets.
The carrier is already moving into critical public-sector infrastructure. Alongside the launch, Taiwan backed a Resilient Backup Data Center project for Guatemala’s Ministry of Public Finance. The agreement was signed by Taiwan’s ambassador to Guatemala, Vivia Chang, and Pai Ming-cheng, vice president of Chunghwa Telecom’s International Business Branch.
Chunghwa Telecom Chairman Alex Chien said Guatemala would become a regional base for integrated ICT and cybersecurity services.
The move gives Chunghwa Telecom an early foothold in a market where digital resilience is becoming an infrastructure priority, while giving Guatemala another international technology provider as it accelerates its push to modernise government systems, enterprise networks and national digital capacity and attract more technology investment from overseas.
