Peru and Chile have formalized a strategic alliance to jointly develop Artificial Intelligence technologies and advance Latam-GPT – a regional language model designed to strengthen Latin America’s technological autonomy.
The Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) of Peru and Chile’s Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation signed a memorandum of understanding to launch collaborative AI projects with long-term regional impact.
The agreement was endorsed by Peru’s PCM chief Ernesto Álvarez Miranda and Chilean minister Aldo Valle Acevedo – with both governments highlighted the importance of building AI capabilities that reflect Latin America’s identity, priorities and values.
Premier Álvarez emphasized that the partnership marks a decisive step toward shaping the region’s digital future and strengthening its voice on the global stage. The initiative already includes Brazil and the Dominican Republic – reflecting growing regional commitment to reducing dependence on foreign AI models.
Minister Valle noted that the agreement carries a significant political message – LATAM nations are determined to pursue technological sovereignty and create AI with a clear regional identity.
The memorandum sets a framework for ethical, safe and responsible AI development. It promotes cooperation in designing a language model for Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as sharing knowledge, best practices and protected data following strict transparency and personal-information standards.
Technical coordination will be led by CENIA (Chile’s National Center for Artificial Intelligence) and Peru’s Secretariat of Government and Digital Transformation. Both institutions will drive AI training for public officials and foster practical applications in education, health, social development and transportation.
