Siemens Mobility has secured a landmark contract with EFE Trenes de Chile, the country’s national railway operator, to deliver Chile’s first European Train Control System Level 2 (ETCS L2) project.
The deployment introduces Siemens Mobility’s Signaling X platform to Latin America for the first time, operating on the DS3 platform engineered for Safety Integrity Level 4 applications.
The project covers 87 kilometers across the Alameda-Melipilla line (61 km) and the Santiago-Batuco line (26 km). Siemens Mobility will engineer, supply, install and commission advanced signaling and control systems over five years, followed by a ten-year maintenance agreement.
Signaling X integrates interlockings, signaling and control systems into a centralized virtualized data center. Built as a cloud-ready solution using commercial off-the-shelf hardware, it simplifies rail infrastructure, enhances cybersecurity and prepares networks for AI-driven applications.
ETCS Level 2 enables continuous communication between trains and trackside systems, improving capacity, reliability and operational efficiency.
The scope includes advanced interlockings, wayside equipment, traffic control centers and onboard systems for 32 trains. The communication system leverages 4G-LTE technology with future 5G readiness. The solution reduces the number of interlockings required, simplifies maintenance and supports future expansion.
The agreement also includes comprehensive digital services covering preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance.
Siemens Mobility will establish a regional software maintenance Center of Competence in Chile, strengthening long-term rail digitalization efforts and supporting future projects across Latin America under EFE’s modernization strategy.
