Gartner: All IT work will involve AI by 2030

By the end of the decade, every piece of IT work will involve Artificial Intelligence in some form, according to new research from Gartner.

A survey of more than 700 CIOs found that by 2030, 75% of IT work will be done by humans augmented with AI, while the remaining 25% will be carried out by AI alone. No IT work, the study predicts, will be completed without AI involvement.

Speaking at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo 2025, analysts warned that most organizations are still unprepared to capture the full value of AI. “While not all AI is ready to deliver value, humans are even less ready to capture it,” said Alicia Mullery, VP Analyst, Gartner.

The firm argues that companies must develop both AI readiness – the maturity of their tools and technologies—and human readiness, which focuses on workforce skills and adaptability.

Gartner forecasts AI’s impact on jobs will be neutral through 2026, but by 2036, it could create more than 500 million net new roles supporting AI-driven initiatives. “AI isn’t about job loss – it’s about workforce transformation,” said Daryl Plummer, Gartner VP and Chief of AI Research.

However, many firms are still struggling to make AI pay off. Gartner’s research shows 72% of CIOs report breaking even or losing money on AI investments, often due to hidden costs and change management challenges.
