Reliable connectivity has become a fundamental requirement for modern student life. The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith partnered with Boldyn Networks to modernise its residential Wi-Fi environment, improve the student experience and reduce the support burden on university staff.

Reliable, high-performance connectivity is no longer a luxury for today’s students.
Whether accessing online learning platforms, participating in virtual classes, conducting research, streaming content or communicating with peers, reliable Internet access is essential to both academic success and campus life.
The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith (UAFS) recognised that expectations around connectivity had evolved significantly. Students increasingly arrive on campus with multiple connected devices and expect a seamless digital experience throughout their university journey.
UAFS is a leading public university serving approximately 6,000 students through more than 70 academic programmes. The institution supports learners preparing for careers across a broad range of sectors, from education and healthcare to advanced manufacturing and technology.
Around 900 students live on campus across two residence halls, making residential connectivity a critical component of the overall student experience.
The challenge
Since first offering student housing in 2005, UAFS had relied on outsourced wired and wireless connectivity services delivered by a range of local providers. While this approach initially met the institution’s needs, ongoing Wi-Fi issues within the residence halls began to create challenges for both students and staff.
Connectivity problems were affecting student satisfaction and generating an increasing number of support requests. Staff members often found themselves spending valuable time addressing network-related concerns instead of focusing on other aspects of student support and campus operations.
The university recognised that it needed a more reliable, scalable and student-focused approach to residential connectivity.
Residence hall networks have become increasingly complex environments. Students connect laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, tablets, smart televisions and other devices simultaneously. As a result, networks must support high-density usage while maintaining consistent performance.
When connectivity issues occur, the impact extends beyond simple inconvenience. Poor Wi-Fi can affect coursework, communication and entertainment while also placing additional strain on IT and residential support teams.
UAFS wanted a solution capable of delivering a consistently high-quality experience while reducing operational complexity.
The solution
To address these challenges, UAFS partnered with Boldyn Networks to deploy a fully managed residential network service.
Unlike traditional local Internet service providers, Boldyn Networks delivers a purpose-built residential network specifically designed for higher education environments. The company combines high-performance Wi-Fi infrastructure with proactive support services and day-to-day operational management.
The goal was not simply to upgrade network hardware but to create a fully managed service model that would provide students with reliable connectivity while reducing the support burden on university staff.
Working closely with UAFS stakeholders, Boldyn Networks led the transition to the new environment. The implementation process was designed to minimise disruption while modernising the underlying network infrastructure.
The fully managed approach meant that network monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting and support could be handled more efficiently, allowing university staff to focus on serving students rather than resolving connectivity issues.
Delivering a better student experience
The new residential network was designed around the expectations of modern students.
Today’s residence halls function as highly connected living and learning environments. Students expect to move seamlessly between studying, collaborating, streaming content and gaming without experiencing interruptions.
By delivering a purpose-built residential Wi-Fi service, UAFS was able to provide a more reliable and responsive experience across a wide range of devices and usage scenarios.
The impact extended beyond connectivity itself. Improved network performance contributed to a more positive residential experience, helping students remain connected to both their academic work and campus community.
The solution also introduced a more streamlined support model. Rather than navigating multiple service providers or escalating issues through several channels, students and staff benefited from a clearer and more efficient process for resolving any connectivity concerns.
Measurable results
The network environment now supports substantial levels of student activity and device connectivity.
Key network statistics include:
- Average devices per user: 11.6
- Average active devices: 929
- Average active accounts: 448
- Total downloads: 288,640GB
- Total uploads: 33,451GB
- Total throughput: 322,092GB
- Peak download utilisation: 1.61Gbps
- Peak upload utilisation: 0.23Gbps
These figures highlight the scale of demand being placed on the residential network and demonstrate the importance of a robust infrastructure capable of supporting high volumes of simultaneous activity.
The network is now handling hundreds of active users and devices while delivering the performance levels students require for learning, communication and entertainment.
Reducing the support burden
One of the most significant outcomes of the project has been the reduction in support-related challenges experienced by university staff.
Previously, connectivity issues often required intervention from residence hall personnel and other university teams. Troubleshooting could involve multiple parties and lengthy resolution processes.
The new managed service model has simplified this experience considerably.
Joe England, Resident Director of the Lion’s Den at UAFS, said: “There have definitely been fewer issues reported to myself or my staff that need a ticket submitted. The rare occasions where I have had to work with a student to fix an issue have resulted in a seamless experience where we no longer have to talk to several people to work through the problem.”
This feedback reflects one of the core objectives of the project: reducing operational complexity while improving service quality.
By streamlining support processes and improving network reliability, the university has been able to create a more positive experience for both students and staff.
Supporting the future of student housing
The UAFS project demonstrates how higher education institutions can benefit from purpose-built residential connectivity solutions.
As digital learning continues to evolve and students bring increasing numbers of connected devices to campus, the importance of reliable residence hall networks will only grow.
Universities are under pressure to deliver technology experiences that match student expectations while managing resources efficiently. Fully managed residential networking services offer a way to meet these demands without increasing the burden on internal teams.
For UAFS, the partnership with Boldyn Networks has helped transform residential connectivity from a recurring challenge into a strategic asset that supports student success and campus life.
By modernising its residence hall network and adopting a managed service approach, the university has strengthened the student experience, improved operational efficiency and created a foundation capable of supporting future growth and digital innovation.
