The University of Guelph and Xanadu have signed an MoU to develop quantum computing education and help prepare students for careers in the sector.
The University of Guelph and Xanadu have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on quantum computing education, skills development and potential research opportunities.
The partnership will focus on providing students with practical experience of quantum computing technologies as Canada continues to develop its quantum sector through the country’s National Quantum Strategy.
“Canada has an opportunity to be a global leader in quantum technologies, but realising that potential depends on developing the next generation of quantum talent,” said Dr. Joanne O’Meara, Associate Dean Academic for the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences as well as physics professor at the University of Guelph.
“Partnerships like this help ensure our students gain hands-on experience with emerging technologies while enabling the University of Guelph to contribute to Canada’s growing quantum ecosystem through talent development, education and future collaboration.”
Under the agreement, the University of Guelph and Xanadu will identify opportunities for educational and research collaboration, share knowledge and resources and support curriculum development introducing students to practical quantum computing concepts and technologies.
Students will also have opportunities to work with tools including PennyLane, Xanadu’s open-source software framework for quantum computing.
“The partnership between Xanadu and the University of Guelph highlights the essential role of academic and industry collaboration in scaling the quantum workforce,” says Dr. Christian Weedbrook, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Xanadu.
“We’re excited to work together to expand quantum education and equip students with the practical skills needed to thrive in the quantum industry.”
The MoU will run until 2028, with the organisations aiming to support the development of Canada’s quantum technology workforce and provide students with skills and experience relevant to emerging careers in the sector.
