Spectra Logic selected by TACC to power exabyte-scale data archive for Horizon supercomputer

Spectra Logic has been selected as the tape library provider for a major new archive deployment at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin.

Spectra TFinity Plus tape libraries will form the long-term storage backbone of TACC’s 2025 Ranch storage system, an exabyte-scale archive built to support Horizon, the upcoming NSF Leadership-Class Computing Facility system and the world’s largest academic supercomputer dedicated to open scientific research.

In collaboration with Dell Technologies and Versity, Spectra Logic will help protect, preserve and manage the massive volume of data generated by Horizon’s advanced AI and simulation capabilities.

The new Ranch archive represents one of Dell’s highest-capacity deployments to date and underscores Spectra’s continued leadership in supporting data preservation for high-performance computing and AI-intensive environments.

“As we prepare to launch Horizon, what will be the most powerful academic supercomputer ever built for open science, we required a solution that could ensure the performance, reliability, and long-term integrity our research community depends on,” said Dan Stanzione, Associate Vice President for Research at The University of Texas at Austin and Executive Director of TACC.

“The combined solution from Spectra Logic, Dell Technologies, and Versity delivers trusted technology with a proven record at the world’s leading HPC centers.”

“With Horizon delivering massive advances in simulation and AI performance, TACC needed an archival solution to match its vision,” said Nathan Thompson, CEO of Spectra Logic.

“Our TFinity Plus library provides the density and resilience required for next-generation research.”
