Samsung partners with Hyundai Motor Group to connect smart homes with cars

The partnership between Samsung’s SmartThings platform and Hyundai Motor Group’s connected cars will lead to the development of solutions that integrate smart homes and connected cars.

Samsung Electronics has confirmed a collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group that will expand its SmartThings platform to support connected cars, including electric vehicles (EVs).

The companies have signed an MoU with the purpose of developing solutions for future lifestyles that integrate smart homes and connected cars.

They will work together for the next-generation smart home to connect Samsung’s SmartThings platform with Hyundai and Kia’s connected cars, including electric vehicles, to develop Home-to-Car and Car-to-Home services, as well as an integrated vehicle and home energy management service.

Home-to-Car and Car-to-Home services connect the smart home with the vehicle’s infotainment systems, enabling remote control in both directions.

“This collaboration will enable communication from Home-to-Car and integrated home energy management services that are optimized for future lifestyles. By connecting the SmartThings platform with vehicles, we will be able to significantly improve the customer experience both at home and in the car,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics.

Users will be able to adjust their environments with SmartThings, simultaneously operating multiple devices, including vehicles, through routines such as “good morning routine” and “arrival home routine.”

For example, when a Galaxy smartphone’s morning alarm sounds, the curtains will automatically open and the lights and TV will turn on. When users are ready to go out to work, their car will adjust to an ideal temperature. In addition, smartphone and TV screens will display information such as the remaining battery of the electric vehicle and its range.

“This is an opportunity to make connected car Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services more convenient in various fields. We plan to accelerate our technology development to make the journeys of Hyundai and Kia’s global customers meaningful on a continuous basis,” said Haeyoung Kwon, Vice President of Hyundai and Kia’s Infotainment Development Center.

The integrated home energy management service will allow users to control how much energy connected devices in their homes consume. Energy information from its electric vehicles and chargers will also be available, allowing users to adjust the optimal time to charge their vehicles.

To further strengthen Car-to-Home services, Samsung is working closely with HARMAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, on the application of HARMAN’s “Ready Upgrade,” a digital cockpit package product that enables hardware and software upgrades.

With Ready Upgrade, users will be able to install SmartThings features to use several of the services found in Car-to-Home.
