Digital Realty, global provider of cloud- and carrier-neutral data centre, colocation, and interconnection solutions, announced that the Mozambique Internet Exchange, MOZIX has launched a new point of presence at Digital Realty’s Maputo One, MPM1 data centre. This strategic move enhances local peering capabilities and reinforces the country’s digital infrastructure by enabling more efficient and cost-effective traffic exchange between network operators.
MOZIX’s deployment at MPM1 marks a significant milestone in Mozambique’s digital transformation journey. As the country’s only Internet Exchange Point, IXP, MOZIX plays a vital role in keeping local Internet traffic within national borders, reducing latency, improving user experience, and minimising reliance on costly international bandwidth.
“MOZIX has been instrumental in fostering a more robust Internet ecosystem in Mozambique,” said Luís Neves Cabral Domingos, Director, Eduardo Mondlane Informatics Centre, CIUEM. “With traffic peaking at over 150 Gbps and 19 active peering members, our expansion into Digital Realty’s MPM1 data centre allows us to further our mission of enhancing network efficiency and resilience.”
Located in the heart of Maputo, MPM1 offers a highly interconnected environment for domestic and international carriers, content providers, and enterprises. With more than 15 networks already connected, the facility now serves as a critical hub for Internet exchange and digital innovation in the region.
“The integration of MOZIX into our Maputo facility represents a major step forward for connectivity in Mozambique,” said José Almeida, General Manager, iColo: A Digital Realty Company in Mozambique. “As a carrier-neutral facility, MPM1 provides a robust platform for peering and interconnection, and we are proud to support the growth of the local digital economy through enhanced infrastructure.”
According to the Internet Society Pulse, over 35% of Mozambique’s local Internet traffic is currently routed through IXPs within the country. With Internet penetration standing at 19.8% and more than 6.9 million users online as of early 2025, the need for scalable, high-performance digital infrastructure is more pressing than ever.
Digital Realty continues to invest in developing a pan-African interconnection ecosystem. In addition to Mozambique, Digital Realty operates carrier-neutral data centres in Kenya, hosting IXPs such as the Kenya Internet Exchange Point, KIXP, the London Internet Exchange, LINX, and Asteroid IX across its Nairobi and Mombasa facilities.
Combined, these exchanges handle traffic volumes averaging 100 Gbps, underpinning the company’s vision of enabling seamless digital connectivity across the continent.
This announcement reinforces Digital Realty’s broader commitment to accelerating digital transformation across Africa. With operations in Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, and South Africa, the company is building a pan-African interconnection platform that supports regional growth and global integration. Digital Realty was recently ranked number one in Africa on Cloudscene’s Data Centre Ecosystem Leaderboard, cementing its position as an enabler of digital infrastructure on the continent.
