MindHYVE.ai and The Open University of Kenya collaborate on AI-powered learning and academic innovation

A partnership between the Open University of Kenya and US-based AI company MindHYVE.ai aims to redefine how Artificial Intelligence supports digital learning, academic delivery and workforce readiness in Africa. Professor Elijah Omwenga, Vice-Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya (OUK), tells us how the collaboration will embed Agentic AI into the university’s digital ecosystem to drive personalised learning, faculty enablement and data-led curriculum innovation while maintaining strong governance and compliance.

The Open University of Kenya (OUK) and MindHYVE.ai, a US-based AI company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a strategic collaboration focused on advancing AI-powered learning enablement and academic innovation.

The collaboration explores the integration of ArthurAI, MindHYVE.ai’s proprietary agentic AI system, into selected areas of OUK’s digital learning ecosystem. The initiative is designed to support personalised learning, faculty enablement, data-driven curriculum innovation and workforce-aligned upskilling, positioning OUK as a leader in next-generation digital education across Africa.

Under the MoU, the parties will jointly explore implementation of ArthurAI as a virtual academic enabler, supporting learners and educators through adaptive, real-time learning assistance. The collaboration also includes curriculum co-design, impact evaluation, localisation aligned with Kenya’s education policy and adherence to the Kenya Data Protection Act (2019).

“This collaboration reflects the Open University of Kenya’s commitment to innovation, access and academic excellence,” said Professor Elijah Omwenga, Vice-Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya. “By exploring responsible AI-powered learning systems, we aim to enhance student success, empower faculty and strengthen Kenya’s position as a digital education leader.”

“OUK represents a bold and forward-looking model for higher education in the digital age,” said Bill Faruki, Founder and CEO at MindHYVE.ai™. “This collaboration allows us to responsibly explore how Agentic AI can support learning, teaching and workforce readiness—while maintaining transparency, ethics and local relevance.”

This collaboration reflects a shared vision to advance responsible AI in education, expand access to high-quality digital learning and support Kenya’s broader goals for workforce development and innovation.

We asked Professor Elijah Omwenga, Vice-Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya, further questions to find out more.

What motivated the Open University of Kenya to partner with MindHYVE.ai, and how does this collaboration align with your long-term vision for Digital Transformation in higher education?

The Open University of Kenya was motivated by a shared strategic vision: using advanced digital innovation to expand access, quality and relevance of higher education at scale. As a fully digital public university, OUK was established to reimagine higher education delivery, not merely digitise traditional models. Partnering with MindHYVE.ai allows us to embed agentic AI capabilities directly into our learning ecosystem, moving beyond static LMS tools toward adaptive, intelligent learning systems.

This collaboration aligns with OUK’s long-term Digital Transformation agenda by supporting personalised learning journeys, faculty productivity and data-driven academic innovation, while positioning the university as a continental pioneer in AI-powered education. The MoU explicitly frames this partnership as a strategic step toward workforce upskilling, SME readiness and national digital capacity building, which are core to OUK’s mandate

How do you envision ArthurAI enhancing personalised learning experiences for OUK students compared to existing digital learning tools?

ArthurAI introduces a shift from content-centric digital learning tools to learner-centric, adaptive intelligence. Unlike traditional platforms that deliver the same materials to all students, ArthurAI functions as a real-time academic agent that dynamically responds to individual learner needs, pacing, performance patterns and engagement signals.

Through personalised learning journeys, ArthurAI supports students with contextual explanations, adaptive feedback and just-in-time academic assistance. The MoU outlines its deployment as a virtual teaching assistant embedded within selected programmes, enabling continuous learning support rather than episodic interaction. This allows OUK students—many of whom are working adults—to experience a more responsive, flexible and outcome-oriented learning environment.

In what ways will faculty members be supported and empowered through the integration of this agentic AI system?

Faculty empowerment is a central objective of the partnership. ArthurAI is designed to augment—not replace—academic staff by reducing routine instructional burdens and enhancing pedagogical effectiveness. Through real-time analytics, feedback loops and AI-assisted academic delivery, faculty can focus more on higher-order teaching, mentoring and curriculum innovation.

The MoU specifically provides for faculty enablement through pilot implementations that include metrics tracking, instructional feedback and academic impact evaluation. This enables lecturers to gain actionable insights into learner engagement, comprehension gaps and content effectiveness, thereby strengthening evidence-based teaching and continuous improvement

Can you elaborate on how curriculum co-design and data-driven insights will shape future academic programmes at OUK?

Curriculum co-design under this partnership represents a move toward living curricula—programmes that evolve based on learner data, workforce needs and pedagogical evidence. ArthurAI’s analytics capabilities allow OUK to identify trends in learner performance, skill acquisition and progression pathways across programmes.

As outlined in the MoU, these insights will inform the co-development of AI-enhanced courses, digital assessments and faculty augmentation models. Over time, this data-driven approach will help OUK align its academic offerings more closely with labour market demands, private-sector skills needs and national development priorities, ensuring academic relevance and graduate employability.

How will the university ensure compliance with the Kenya Data Protection Act (2019) while deploying AI-powered learning technologies?

Compliance with the Kenya Data Protection Act (2019) is a non-negotiable pillar of this collaboration. The MoU explicitly mandates localisation and regulatory alignment, ensuring that all AI deployments respect Kenyan legal, ethical and educational frameworks.

Data handled under the ArthurAI deployment will be encrypted, anonymised, securely stored and processed strictly for agreed academic purposes. MindHYVE.ai has committed to transparent, auditable AI practices aligned with international standards such as ISO/IEC 27001, while OUK retains oversight through ethical review and governance mechanisms. This dual-layer approach ensures responsible AI use that protects learner privacy and institutional integrity.

What impact do you hope this partnership will have on Kenya’s workforce development and the country’s position as a digital education leader in Africa?

At a national level, this partnership is designed to contribute directly to workforce upskilling, SME readiness and digital talent development. By embedding intelligent, adaptive learning systems into higher education, OUK aims to produce graduates who are not only credentialed but also demonstrably skilled, agile, and industry-ready.

Regionally, the collaboration positions Kenya as a testbed and reference point for responsible, large-scale AI deployment in public higher education. As articulated in the MoU, OUK’s role as a continental pioneer in AI-powered education strengthens Kenya’s standing as a digital education leader in Africa, capable of exporting knowledge, models and innovation across the region.
