GitHub outage: Microsoft works to restore services

GitHub has been hit by an unplanned outage with multiple core services experiencing elevated error rates and reduced availability.

The Microsoft-owned code development platform began reporting problems from at least 3.40pm CEST on Monday, affecting a range of actions.

GitHub Copilot, the platform’s AI coding assistant, was also operating with limited functionality during the incident.

Service conditions began improving gradually from around 7pm CEST as GitHub identified the causes of the outage and began to restore availability. However, its status page continued to report significant problems with Copilot and partial outages affecting GitHub Issues as recovery work progressed.

GitHub Issues is widely used by software teams to report bugs, submit feature requests and track development work, making disruption to the service potentially significant for organisations that rely heavily on GitHub for collaborative software projects.

The specific technical cause of the outage has yet to be disclosed.

The latest statement on GitHub Status at 9.36 UTC said: “We are investigating reports of impacted performance for some GitHub services.”
