Sparkle continues its commitment to environmental sustainability for its Istanbul data centre

Sparkle, the first international service provider in Italy and among the top 10 global operators, has completed the expansion and renovation of its Istanbul data centre with the adoption of state-of-the-art energy efficient equipment.

Today, data centres consume more than 2% of the world’s electricity, requiring the implementation of more efficient technologies able to meet the growing demand for services while decreasing energy consumption.

Sparkle has been the first in Turkey to introduce Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries in its premises in 2018, becoming the first green data centre in the country; located in Yenibosna and served by Sparkle’s Tier 1 global IP Transit service Seabone, it is one of the largest and most important open colocation facilities in Turkey, featuring advanced technologies and sophisticated monitoring systems.

In the last year, the facility has been completely restructured and expanded with additional 300 m2 of white space area; moreover, several energy-related interventions have been carried out to improve the data centre’s environmental sustainability, reliability and efficiency while providing additional power and space to new and existing customers.

Updates included replacement of the power system with the adoption of energy efficient technologies for all its components – Medium and Low Voltage (MV and LV) transformers, generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) and batteries – and the introduction of a new cooling system able to increase capacity by 40% while reducing consumption by 14%. These updates resulted in an improvement of the average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).

In addition, the data centre modernisation included the renovation of fire and safety systems, to provide customers with a secure and sustainable infrastructure fully compliant with regulation on customer data security and privacy.

Sparkle’s interventions in this facility confirm the company’s commitment to offer a full range of integrated ICT solutions and global connectivity to service providers and to multinational and domestic enterprises seeking for sustainable, secure and best-in-breed infrastructure for their mission-critical IT systems.
