An innovative collaboration in Italy’s cloud services landscape has been announced by Cubbit, the first geo-distributed cloud storage enabler and HERABIT, the digital company of Hera Group.
After adopting Cubbit’s technology in 2023, HERABIT is now expanding to the business market by integrating DS3 Composer software into its data centres located across Italy, in the cities of Imola (Emilia-Romagna), Siziano (Lombardy) and Santa Lucia di Piave (Veneto). This marks Cubbit’s first regional Business Alliance Partnership, making distributed cloud storage architecture available to all industrial sectors and ensuring full local control, data sovereignty, resilience, efficiency and S3 compatibility. The two companies are consolidating an alliance that positions HERABIT as the “preferred infrastructure partner” for Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, paving the way for a model that can be replicated in other local and international contexts.
Key use cases will range from backup to long-term data archiving, as well as the creation of data lakes for enterprises and artificial intelligence systems. The benefits for companies include enhanced security, as data is encrypted, fragmented and distributed across multiple nodes, ensuring files remain accessible at all times yet never exposed in full.
HERABIT’s customers will also gain sovereignty and local control over their data, as the technology is entirely Italian and data remains in Italy, within HERABIT’s infrastructure – which comprises three data centres and 321,000 km of cumulative fibre networks. Performance is enhanced by geographical proximity and proprietary assets that ensure low latency and continuity of service. Finally, Cubbit’s efficient storage models help reduce both costs and environmental impact.
HERABIT will launch the service with an initial capacity of 2 petabytes dedicated to business customers, with further expansion planned from 2026.
Stefano Onofri, co-CEO and co-founder of Cubbit, said: “The collaboration with HERABIT shows how European service providers, thanks to Cubbit’s technology, can reclaim a leading role in the global storage market by creating and delivering their own resilient, sovereign and competitive cloud services. We are proud to see a customer such as HERABIT further expand the adoption of our solution, bringing benefits not only to the organisation itself but also to its end customers.”
Alessandro Aiello, General Manager of HERABIT, added: “The agreement with Cubbit marks a strategic step forward in the evolution of our cloud offering. Integrating their technology into our data centres allows us to deliver a cloud storage service that is secure, flexible and highly competitive, addressing the concrete needs of businesses. It is a commitment that combines digital innovation and data sovereignty in support of regional economic development.”
