Nestlé has completed a major global upgrade to SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, marking a milestone in its Digital Transformation journey to enhance efficiency, innovation and real-time insights.
Nestlé S.A has announced it has completed its first major upgrade to SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition. This wave covers 112 countries with more countries in Europe and the Americas to follow soon.
The first of three upgrades, this rollout involved more than 50,000 employees and was completed in under 20 hours. Supported by a standardised technology landscape that enabled minimal downtime, this smooth transition to SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition sets a new benchmark for Digital Transformation in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry.
A long-time SAP customer, Nestlé has used SAP software since 2000 as its single unified system to manage its global operations and moved to the cloud in 2022. The upgrade to SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition is a strategic leap in its transformation journey to future-proof the company as consumer expectations evolve and new technologies reshape the marketplace.
“We are building a future-ready enterprise – one that works smarter and faster,’”said Chris Wright, Nestlé’s head of IT and CIO.
“Having a common ERP system as our backbone is already a tremendous advantage for Nestlé. It provides a unified platform and data foundation that allows us to execute end to end across the value chain and have visibility across the entire company and beyond. With the upgrade, we gain new capabilities and insights that will help scale new products faster globally to meet the needs of our customers and consumers and with AI and automation at scale, we’ll drive efficiency and effectiveness across our value chain.”
With a portfolio including global icons such as Nescafé, Kit Kat and Maggi, Nestlé chose to upgrade to SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition to accelerate the rollout of new products and innovations across the group.
The upgrade also supports the company in using data-driven insights and improving processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness across its operations to better serve consumers worldwide who rely on its products every day.
“Nestlé’s successful go-live of SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition showcases how scale can be a strategic advantage for innovation,’ said Thomas Saueressig, member of the Executive Board of SAP SE, Customer Services and Delivery.
“As one of the world’s most recognisable and forward-thinking companies, Nestlé exemplifies how cutting-edge technology empowers global brands to anticipate consumer trends, optimise operations and deliver exceptional experiences at scale.”
The upgrade provides a robust digital core ready for AI and automation at scale across the company’s value chain. It enables Nestlé to gain real-time data insights for smarter decision-making.
By harnessing AI and the Joule copilot across its operations, value chain and product portfolio, Nestlé can personalise consumer engagement and optimise operations with greater agility. This helps the company remain responsive to evolving consumer expectations and lays the foundation for a truly omnichannel experience.

Ralf Huebenthal, Global Head of IT platforms, Nestlé, took our questions on the upgrade.
Q1 What impact has the rollout of the SAP solution had on Nestlé so far?
In August 2025, Nestlé achieved a historic milestone by completing the world’s largest and fastest SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition upgrade for its Asia, Oceania and Africa (AOA) region.
The project involved migrating 50,000 users across 114 countries and 102 factories in the AOA region with the rest of the Nestlé group to follow within the next two years.
This first upgrade was executed using a ‘brownfield’ approach, meaning the existing SAP environment was converted in place rather than rebuilt from scratch. The conversion to SAP S/4HANA was delivered in 19 hours and 35 minutes, setting a new industry benchmark for scale and speed.
Business continuity was maintained throughout the cutover and a blended training approach ensured users experienced no disruption to daily operations from day one.
The upgrade is more than a technical feat. It is a leap forward in Digital Transformation enabling real-time insights, automation and AI-driven decision-making across procurement, supply chain, finance and manufacturing. This gives Nestlé a competitive edge to operate with both speed and scale.
One immediate advantage of the upgraded SAP transactional core for zone AOA is the ability to implement advanced Available-to-Promise (aATP). This next-generation smart order fulfilment solution matches supply with demand in real time, unlocking further capabilities that will transform how Nestlé operates and serves its customers.
Q2 What were the technical challenges inherent in implementing the SAP solution with Nestlé?
Migrating such a vast consolidated system required ensuring the integrity of business-critical data and transactions throughout the process. Teams needed to maintain full stability across procurement, supply chain, finance and manufacturing.
Executing the world’s largest SAP S/4HANA upgrade required meticulous planning and cross-functional collaboration. Complexity stemmed from:
• Migrating a highly consolidated single-template SAP landscape spanning multiple countries and business unit
• Ensuring zero disruption to Nestlé’s operations
•Coordinating IT, business functions, Integrated Business Services (IBS) and external partners to manage dependencies, orchestrate cutover and troubleshoot in real time
• Implementing a comprehensive change management approach with blended tailored training, ongoing communication and robust support to deliver a seamless transition for tens of thousands of users
Despite these challenges, the upgrade was delivered ahead of the planned 24-hour window thanks to robust preparation and a ‘one team’ mindset.
Q3 How did SAP work with Nestlé in implementing the solution?
The partnership between Nestlé and SAP dates back to 2000 with the first global implementation of a single SAP template designed to transform Nestlé into an integrated global company by standardising Business Processes, Data and Systems.
This gave the company a competitive advantage to operate at speed and scale.
For the current upgrade, SAP’s technical teams worked closely with Nestlé’s IT and business leaders, ensuring best practices and minimising risk throughout the migration. The result is a strengthened digital core that positions Nestlé for continued innovation and agility.
SAP recognised this upgrade as the largest and fastest migration of an existing system to S/4HANA in the SAP cloud globally.
Q4 What future technical requirements does Nestlé foresee evolving over the life of the partnership?
Looking ahead, the AOA upgrade lays the foundation for:
• Scalable Digital Transformation: The converted SAP core is designed to support future innovation including advanced automation, AI integration and enhanced business networks
• Agility and adaptability: Nestlé can accelerate its digital roadmap, respond faster to market changes and roll out new products globally with greater speed
• Continuous improvement: A unified architecture enables ongoing enhancements in supply chain visibility, real-time analytics and standardised processes across regions
Nestlé’s ambition is clear: to build a future-ready enterprise combining global scale with local agility, powered by a robust digital core.
The AOA SAP S/4HANA Cloud upgrade is a landmark in enterprise IT demonstrating how scale, speed and collaboration can deliver transformative business value. Nestlé’s experience sets a new standard for Digital Transformation in the consumer goods sector with lessons for any organisation seeking to modernise at scale.
